Car rental in El Salvador

We are 4 adults going to El Salvador Decameron in December. We like to rent a car and explore the country on day trips. This is what we have done all over Belize and Costa Rica and it was great. Has anyone done this in El Salvador? Is it even possible? I will die of boredom if I can't leave the compound for 2 weeks. Do not like organized tours. Hope someone has info. Thanks.

Yes, you surely can rent a car.

I will see if there is a car rental in the town of Sonsonate. I know there are ones that even bring You the car to Decameron (which is in a relatively isolated place).

I would recommend not driving by night and not driving very fast (speed limit is about 90 km/h) because, even though roads here are usually very good, the signaling may not be so, or sometimes there are cows and persons on the street.

There are also tours by companies mentioned in this forum that are very accomodating to your schedules and needs.

If You look in YouTube for videos of "roquemocan" (my user name) there are many "Driving in El Salvador" videos. They are from place A to place B: From Santa Ana to Tacuba, from Santa Ana to Sonsonate, etc... so You can accustome Yourself to the streets and roads of El Salvador.

The trip advisor says there are armed robberies, rapes, etc which are a frequent occurence in El Salvador. We are concerned with Safety. Although we have traveled through many countries in Europe, Central and South America the warnings for El Salvador seem to be more severe. IS the Decameron in a fairly safe area?

Decameron itself is safe.

As in any other country, city, etc. it all depends on where You are. There are good and bad places like everywhere else. For example, people go to Guatemala all the time and many here consider Guatemala City to be more dangerous than San Salvador city.

In the videos I made, in YouTube, there are also videos of Zacamil, San Bartolo, Soyapango - these are places to avoid - and where tourist wouldn't/shoudn't go.

For some treks that go through lonesome trails, police escort is recommended. For example, to climb the Izalco or Santa Ana Volcano, You first go to Cerro Verde and from there You go with a police escort.

Use common sense, don't go to bad places, and You'll be fine.

I've read several reviews from tourists who have rented a car and felt quite safe and had no problems. But, as someone who is familiar with firearms, I would never rent a car and drive alone in El Salvador or several other Central American countries unless I was armed and for that reason car rental is out for me.

I wouldn't carry firearms as a tourist. Firearms are even prohibited in some places and can get you in trouble. And also if You are not familiar with guns (my personal case) firearms are even more dangerous. I am not sure this thread is going in the right direction...

I was in Tacuba last week and met a Canadian who went to chase butterflies - he first came through Decameron, and then ventured with tours and then relatively alone, but went to hostels that became friends with him and his wife.

If you do not like organized tours and like to go on your own, rental car is definitely your choice. In the case of El Salvador, I would say that you can have most of what you like and a little of what you don´t like and what I mean is that you can rent a car with a bilingual driver which is possible through some Tour companies. In that sense you will be able to go where you would like to go and being sure through the driver that you are not going to a dangerous area, also this people has good knowledge of very good restaurants, and those hidden spots that you can not reach through a map. In this forum people recommends Cuscatlan Tours, Shuttle and Tours and others to do so. Anything I can help you it will be a pleasure to answer your questions and I hope when here you have the greatest of your times. I promise you will fall in love with El Salvador.

i rented a car while in elsalvador, jan of 2009 and did have a positive experience. as with anywhere you go ,common sense and street smarts are keys to survival in any major city. by the way car rentals are super cheap at the airport, which is worth renting even if your not going to use it every day.
