My boyfriend and I are travelling to Nicaragua Dec 29th-Jan11th and are in need of some travel advice. We will be flying into Managua very later at night and have arranged to be picked up at the airport by our hotel.
The following day I have booked 3 nights in Granada (over the New Year). I was then thinking of going to Ometepe for 3 days, and then heading back to Managua for a flight to Little Corn for another 3 days.
Does this sound good? too long/little in some places? Anything we should see in between?
I also still can't decide if we should rent a car from Managua and drive to Granada or whether it's not worth it. We like to be independent from tour groups and enjoy visiting roads off the beaten path, but I am a bit worried about safety. We rented a car in Panama last year and very much enjoyed it - is Nicaragua similar?
Any advice at all about traveling within Nicaragua and must-see places would be greatly appreciated. We are a couple in our mid twenties and enjoy discovering natural sights, snorkeling, horseback riding, swimming, relaxing, etc.
