rent a car or buses?

We have one full week to do Nicaragua. Wanted to play everything by ear. Wanted to do Leon and the beaches there as well as Granada and Ometepe. What is best?

2 days Leon including cerro negro the colonial city juan venado and the beach area of las peñitas, 2 days Granada including the city, the isletas, mombacho volcano and masaya day trip. and finally Ometepe enjoying Charco verde, El ojo the agua mineral springs, El porvenir rock carving and half day hiking from El porvenir to the view point on the way to the top of the volcano.

But if you only has a week and want to do everything is better if you rent a car casue the buses move slow and take time also with the car will give you the mobility to go earlier and go later from places

Rent a vehicle for sure....buses are crammed with people like a sardine can and generally dont leave the depot until full. We have been in Nica for almost two months mostly in SJDS so a vehicle wasnt critical but, our last week we toured Matagalpa, Esteli, and Leon and coudnt imagine bussing it.

Car rental is expensive $40/day for basic, and $50/ 4x4...depending on where u go. For Central America, the higways are great and easy to travel on, smaller areas have substantually rougher roads. If you only have a week, i would rent for sure but, plan your routes prior to departure...most places dont have street names and go by landmarks instead.
