Nicaragua is perhaps the 2nd cheapest country in Central America (after Guatemala).

IMO for what you have described a budget of £15 per day is plenty for Nica. Should be significantly less since you have lots of time there. Costa Rica is generally more expensive for everything (and not as good).

A dorm bed would normally cost $10. Street food is cheap. Kitchens at hostels can be found with a bit of effort. Beer is cheap.. about 75p for a litre. Buses are cheap, around £1 an hour. Tap water is cheap if you make the effort to barter or find a 'supermarket' rather than always opting for convenience stalls. Also easy to save more by getting 5L bottles.

Getting cash is easy with any visa or mastercard. ATMs are common in towns.

My highlights were: Climbing Telica volcano near Leon (Quetzaltrekkers are a great organisation to do this). And a tiny fishing village of El Ostional, down the coast from San Juan del sur. Beautiful beach away from it all. And laguna de apoyo is worth visiting. Ometepe would be a great relaxed place to volunteer

If travelling to costa rica be aware that you need proof of onward travel if the customs official is feeling mean (not always enforced but we got caught out). meaning a booked bus or flight out of costa rica. Obviously as a backpacker you never book buses. A return flight from Nica would not suffice. So be sure to make yourself a fake flight confirmation just in case. We were forced to pay $25 for a bus back to Managua that we would not take.

ATMs most every place.

Do not exchange at airport...they charge 20% on the exchange rate.

Lots of places take $$ so come with 100 bucks cash and you will get it figured out.

$25 a day is about right in Nica...???in CR, but more.

Decent hostels in Nica are 12 bucks a night. You can eat out 2x a day for $8..not fancy but decent. Need some travel..that is cheap locally...busses. Beer is a 80 cents a bottle.

I'm planning a trip to Nicaragua as well with the idea to volunteer...may I ask you where will you volunteer and could you share the contact?

Thank you, safe travels!

staying and working for free for a foreign owned luxury resort is not locally volunteering.
