Mosquitos in March?

We are looking forward to visiting Panama with Overseas Adventure Travel in early March, which is part of the dry season. Can anyone tell us about the mosquito situation that time of year? We will visit Panama City, Cerro La Vieja, Gamboa, and the Canal. Will we need to keep arms and legs covered at all times? We've visited Central America, but not Panama, at this time of year, so we'd appreciate your opinions. Thanks very much.

Mosquitoes are found all year round, especially as you move away from the city and into the jungle areas.

You don't need to cover your arms and legs but wear a good repellent - I rarely use repellent in the city but after 12 years the mosquitoes are tired of my blood!!!

You will especially need it in Gamboa and maybe Cerro La Vieja as these are rural/jungle areas.

If you head to the beaches use an oil-based repellent as you may encounter the dreaded "chitra" or no-see-um - these little buggers bite and you don't realize it until the next day when they start to itch like crazy - found on most beaches in Panama at some time or the other.

Cheers,

Andrew

Thank you for your thoughtful replay. I hate repellent, but will certainly use it. Nasty stuff, but not as bad as being covered with bites. The trip will be worth a few bites, though.
