Realistic to get from Gamboa to Almirante/Bocas in 24hrs?

We are planning to drive from Gamboa to Almirante. We will leave around 4pm. We thought we could drive to Santiago for the night and then continue our drive to Almirante. We then will catch a water taxi to Bocas and then get picked up and taken to our resort. How realistic is it to make that drive and get to Bocas before dark? Should we drive past Santiago to, maybe, Chiriqui? I don't know what the roads are like at night. Any suggestions out there?? We are in Panama for 5 days and want to make the most of it. We really want to see Bocas del Toro Archipelago! Thanks for your help!

It is an approximately 7 to 8 hour drive from Santiago to Alimirante if you catch all the proper turnoffs. Panama is not noted for adequate signage. The road from Gualaca to Chirique Grande has a lot of construction, and steep grades over the Mtns but is quite scenic. There is a car park rite adjacent to the watertaxi to Bocas from Alimirante, and the watertaxi is about a 1/2 hour ride, and they leave every 1/2 hour till 6:30 pm

Thank you for your reply. Is that car park area that you mentioned by the fire dept.? I read somewhere that one good place to park was near that station. Others have said that the kids will flag you down and show you where to park. Will it really be that obvious?

That is one, but the best carpark is Leiza's, just before you go down the little lane to the boat taxi, you can walk to the Boat taxi from Leiza's in a couple of minutes, while you would want to take a taxi from the Bombero. It is all fenced in, has a sign rite there and Leiza is a delightful person. I think she's charging $3 a day.

You say you are leaving Gamboa at 4:00 PM, you do realize now the dangers of driving at night, correct? Well just so you know, it will be dark on the highway to Santiago by 6:30 PM - the sun sets much earlier here than Orlando where you hail from. Just so you know. You will be driving at night if you leave at 4:00 PM.
