Where to Visit

We just returned from Costa Rica and heard both positive and negative reports about Panama. Panama has never been on my list of places to visit, but now I think we might enjoy it there. We are interested in beaches and shopping for souvenirs. I guess you could say we enjoy touristy places while also getting away from the crowds at times. I have the following questions:

1. Where are the nicest beaches in Panama and how do you recommend to get to them?

2. What is Panama City like?

3. How does compare to Costa Rica or places in the Caribbean?

Thansk for your help.

Gary

Sounds like Bocas Del Toro would be perfect for you. It's on the carribean and has touristy parts and hardly any or no touristy parts. Panama City is a big metropolise with a nice Spanish old town.

Well if you don't like crowds PC is not for you - but PC is much much better than San Jose - so if you like some time in a city center -PC is a great choice

Lots of good restaurants, history with Casco Viejo, the canal - and lots of nighlife.

We do like to be around people (crowds) at times, but also like the opportunity to be away from crowds. How do you recommend getting from Bocos Del Toro from Panama City? I don't feel comfortable driving in a foreign country.

You can either fly, around 250 round trip, or overnight 10 hour direct bus for 28 dollars each way.

Panama City is a busy, vibrant city on the west end of the Panama Canal boasting more things to do and see of all other Central American cities. The only thing it is lacking is a pleasurable beach setting, and thats where Bocas del Toro will round out your Panama experience. At the moment there are two, one hour flights daily from PC to Bocas, as this is low season, they add more during high season, and the current cost is $260 R/T. Buses take 10 to 13 hrs to get to Bocas and cost $23-30 dollars, the more expensive direct bus arrives in Alimirante, the mainland jumping off town for Bocas at approx 6am. Rooms in Bocas and the surrounding Islands range from $8 to $500 a nite, and the choice of settings, rivals any place you've ever been, you can even rent your own Island if you choose. The warm Caribbean sea and the plethora of islands in Bocas offers a spectacular choice of beaches to choose from. The diving, surfing, boat touring and nature viewing are off the charts. Bocas also has one of the best Zip-Line canopy tours in all central America, as well as great hiking, cave exploring, and bird watching . We have four species of sea turtles, four species of monkeys, whale sharks, rare Tropic Birds, dolphins, whales and the underwater sealife will take your breath away. The fishing is usually pretty good but this year is epic so far with full limits of Tuna, Wahoo, Grouper and other species coming in every day. Many visitors tell me we have the best selection of restaurants they've ever seen and the nite life is legendary, as was written up in the NY Times article. When in Bocas, consider staying on one of the outer islands for a true Caribbean experience.
