Panama with a small child

We are researching places to go for a month long holiday. We will be about 3-4 adults and 3 children. We are looking into Panama. Is it a safe place for children? Specifically the Coronado/Nueva Gorgona areas. We are looking for beaches to swim and some shopping. Prefer the non touristy areas. We are wanting to rent a house/condo and do most of our own cooking, as well as hang out at the place and relax. I don't want to take my child somewhere where they could be in danger. (I have been researching and been turned away from a few places already). When is the best time to visit when it is not busy? Would a car rental be important? Thanks so much.

The Coronado/Gorgona area is fine with a small child - this area has seen a commercial boom of the past couple of years with more and more small malls with all different types of shops opening up.

There are 3 large and 1 specialty supermarkets now, wine stores, etc etc.

You will need a vehicle in this area - bus service is sporadic or non-existent to some areas and with a small child you will appreciate the convenience of going where you want, when you want and being able to explore the different areas such as El Valle or coming into Panama City (about an hour's drive) to see the canal etc.
