Driver/tour guide

Will be spending 1 night in Panama City before flight to Liberia. Looking for a driver for late afternoon to see the canal, dinner in Casco Viejo and drop off at hotel for morning flight. Any good advice on driver, restaurant, hotel, etc. Thanks.

The visitors' center at Miraflores closes at 5:00pm. So, if you are coming in "late afternoon" that is probably not an option. Unless you really mean "early afternoon."

What kind of hotel are you looking for? Luxury, middle of the road or low cost .. close to Tocumen airport ... close to Albrook airport?

Why do you think you want to have dinner in Casco Viejo? What kind of restaurant are you looking for?

Since you probably aren't coming in early enought to see the locks at the visitors' center, it leaves you with a couple of other options. 1) Visit Casco Viejo before dinner, and have dinner at the restaurant overlooking Miraflores locks. 2) Go see the locks through the chain link fence at Pedro Miguel locks and have dinner elsewhere.in the city. So, again, what kind of restaurant are you looking for?

By the way -- you really don't need to pay an incredibly expensive private driver to take you to these places. You can get a much better deal with a regular taxi driver ... probably the one that you get at the airport to take you to the hotel. Just tell him what you'd like to do.

Thanks for the info. Will be getting in at 2:20pm and would just like to get a quick overview of the City, Locks, etc. Would like to have dinner in a real Panamanian restaurant. Will be overnighting at Riande Aerpuerto Hotel.

Hi Cheese, Panama Canal tickets close 4:30pm take care.. Panama traffic is complicated on this time. Option is Pedro Miguel Locks in case that Miraflores Locks close. Casco Viejo is a good place to eat especially during late afternoon - night. If you like typically food you can try Diablicos, after you have a lot more options like Tantalo with good food and roof bar with modern and old city town view. Riande is a good option to stay and very close of the airport.

You will probably not have time to see the visitors' center at Miraflores. Depending on how many flights are arriving when you get in, it will take 30 to 90 minutes to clear immigration and customs. At that time of day, it can easily take an hour or longer to get to Miraflores directly from the airport. But, I'm guessing that you would probably like to check in at the hotel and drop off your luggage, first. In any case, the visitors' center stops selling tickets at 4:30 and closes at 5:00 pm.

The restaurant at the visitors' center serves Panamanian food. That's an option that would let you watch the ships going through the locks while you have dinner. The view is very good.

There are two restaurants I would recommend for Panamanian cuisine. One is El Trapiche on Via Argentina. it's in a nice neighborhood with shops, apartment buildings and restaurants. El Trapiche has a variety of "comidas tipicas" (typical entrees), and the prices are very reasonable.

The other restaurant is also in the downtown area, Tinajas. The food is almost as good as El Trapiche, and it has a dinner show featuring Panamanian folk music and dance. You'll need to call ahead to make reservations when you arrive. The show is at 9:00pm Tuesday through Saturday. Make your dinner reservation for 7:30 or 8:00pm. www.tinajaspanama.com.

If you decide to go to Tinajas, El Trapiche or some other restaurant, I would recommend negotiating a price with a taxi driver to take you to the Aeropuerto and then to the Pedro Miguel locks on the way to Casco Viejo. Walk around Casco Viejo in the daylight, and then catch another taxi to take you to dinner.

If you decide to have dinner at the Miraflores restaurant, visit Casco Viejo on your way to Miraflores. Most taxi drivers have business cards with their cell phone numbers. Get the card from the driver and call him (or have the Maitre d' call him) when you're nearly ready to leave.

You won't be able to see anything at Miraflores after they close the center.
