General safety query

My wife and I will be in Panama city for just over a week in March and - having read one or two posts on here - I am wondering as the the wisdom of visiting Casco Viejo on our own. we are fairly well travelled but not really keen on organised trips. Would we be safe to visit, and use a fairly expensive SLR, without the security afforded by a tour group? Most of our time in Panama will be spent birdwatching in the forests but we would also like to take in some of the other sights. Thanks for any advice

Best Regards

Two of you, sober, wits about you, on the beaten path, in the daytime, you'll be fine. It's wandering aimlessly after dark that gets people in trouble.

(But you should take a taxi there rather than attempt to walk -- the route goes through a questionable neighborhood or two.)

If you're still nervous, hire a taxi-driver-slash-guide-slash-interpretor for a half-day, and he will walk with you and point out the notable stuff.

There is a pretty good police presence down there and they will steer you away from the questionable areas... The central part of Casco Viejo is pretty safe these days - the area around Plaza Francia and Plaza Bolivar and Plaza Cathedral are all okay to walk around - especially during the day but no problem in the evening either with the usual caveats that Exilio mentions...

Don't be flashy with the SLR, jewelry or cash...

The experts above are right on. I felt very safe walking around alone in the evening. I kept an eye open for unsavory situations... didn't have any issues at all, and I was impressed with the level of police presence (at least one policeman every couple of blocks). Overall, it was quite safe, with normal tourist discretion.

Thanks for the re-assuring responses everyone. Sounds no different to many other places we have visited in Europe, Caribbean and the US

Hi....

Another affirmative here....we started to walk from the public fish market to Casco Viejo and were immediately spotted by the Tourist Police who kindly escorted us to the centre and warned us about a street or two. Honestly can say we felt quite comfortable the whole time in the city - but we have become savvy travellers...never let the guard down!
