So all alcohol sales stop in the casinos and night clubs at midnight Saturday? Do the clubs and casinos close early as well?

Thanks

They won't close, but business will be very slow.

Now, Sunday night at 12:01AM (technically Monday) will likely be wild, especially among supporters of the winning candidates.

Let me try to get this straight. Election day is Sunday May 3.

When exactly will alcohol sales be banned? I keep reading above "midnight Saturday 'til midnight Sunday," but I'm not sure I understand that properly.

When is the ban? From 12:01 a.m. Sunday through 12:01 a.m. Monday, or from 12:01 a.m. Saturday through 12:01 a.m. Sunday??? I'm just figuring that alcohol sales would be banned on the actual day of the election, rather than the day before.

THANKS!

The alcohol ban is the entire 24 hours of Election Day, which is Sunday May 3.

Now, it is *possible* that the Electoral Tribunal will change that -- I've heard some rumors/paranoia that they'll extend it to include Saturday also -- but that has *not* been announced, and it is only speculation.

Btw, the Electoral Tribunal, by law, has absolute authority in the 5 days before and during the election; they are officially in charge of all police forces. This law was created post-Noriega, to prevent the party in power from subverting election results.

Whew, this is certainly a lot of worry about getting a buzz on... :-)

This just in, from the Yahoo! boards:

"The Tribunal Electoral (Panama Electoral Commission) is prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages throughout the country beginning 48 hrs prior to the

Panamanian elections that will take place this Sunday, May 3. A dry law goes into effect at that time. Drinking in public places will not be permitted

during the 48 hour period."

This means no alcohol for all of Saturday (beginning at midnight Friday) and all of Sunday (ending at midnight Sunday).

Jeez, this is getting tiring for someone (like me) who has a well-stocked home in Panama, but here's yet another update:

Someone else just posted on the Yahoo! board that the alcohol ban will begin at noon on Saturday, not at midnight on Friday.

I don't know what's correct... I've not been watching the news...
