Travel from the canal to the airport

Hi

I will be sailing on a private boat from Cancun and traveling through the canal, but I’ll need to get off the boat and fly back to the USA after we transit the canal. I would like to know the safest and easiest way to get from the canal to the airport.

What is the best town/port to get off the boat?

Thank you in advance for all the help.

Once through the canal you will probably moor at either the Balboa Yacht Club or dock at the Flamenco Yacht Club. Both are within Panama City limits.

Both are located along the Amador Causeway which is the breakwater that was built to protect the Canal entrance. Along the causeway are numerous restaurants and bars - with the Balboa Yacht Club having its own fairly active bar.

From either place it will be very easy to get a taxi.

Standard fare to the airport is $12.00 from the city in a regular taxi.

Cheers,

Andrew

Andrew, thanks so much for the quick response. Is that the Marcos A Gelabert International?

Hi,

No, the Marcus A Gelabert (otherwise known as Albrook) Airport is the domestic airport - it's called international as you can land your private plane there and clear immigration and flights do depart for Costa Rica from there (with a stop in David).

All regularly scheduled international flights on major carriers, arrive and depart from Tocumen International Airport. It's about 20 to 30 minutes from the city center on a 4-lane toll highway. From Balboa Yacht Club with normal traffic it would be about 35 to 40 minutes and from Flamenco Marina 45 to 50 minutes.

Add to that at least 15 to 20 minutes for the taxi to arrive once the marina office calls them (unless one happens to be close by or passing at the time) and 1-1/2 to 2 hours prior to departure for check-in and immigration etc.

Make sure once you arrive in Panama that the boat captain completes all the immigration formalities and informs them that you will be departing the boat in Panama, not sure if this is relevant here in Panama but some countries it is. He will probably do this in Colon (unless you stop off in Bocas del Toro).

Hope this helps,

Andrew
