Panama Canal

We want to drive from BC Canada to the Panama Canal. Any suggestions, etc? Are there any RV caravans that do this trip or are interested in doing this trip? How dangerous would a trip like this be?

Can you skip Mexico in this trip? IMO I would not do it right now. Others have different comfort levels.

If you google it there has been a number of people who have done - also if you join the Yahoo group Americans in Panama - there are a couple of members who have done it - one in a RV.

Personally - might do it in truck but not an RV - just sticks out too much - over the last few years - Mexico, Guatamala, Honduras and El slavador have gotten more dangerous due to drug violence and gang activity - and the only country I ever had a problem in was CR - lots of probelms with theft there - especially from vehicles.

If you do it - do it in an older RV - I do see some of those - but have never seen one of the newer - expensive RV's ( like you see in Florida) in panama, you might as well put a big X on your back. You never want to stand out as far as money goes in Latin America - best to blend in.

Most years I've seen a large contingent of RV's coming down - traveling as a group - gives safety in numbers and probably there's a leader who's done it all before and knows the ropes at each border crossing.

Paperwork is the killer - every border you need copies and copies of everything - plus all the originals - plus some cash (how much depends on your Spanish and your patience).

I can't remember the name of the RV group but it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Cheers,

More people than you think make this trip and a lot continue all the way to tip of Argentina. Most start out as solo travelers but often meet and then travel with others going in the same general direction, South.
