Immigration authorities in Panama will turn away any tourist

Full quote seen on news.co website reads 'Immigration authorities in Panama will turn away any tourists who do not have a bus ticket returning to Costa Rica'. If we go to Panama by bus and return by plane e.g. bus from San Jose to David and return by plane from Bocas del Toro to San Jose - will the return air ticket satisfy immigration?

Yes (air ticket will work) - you can also show a credit card to prove you are solvent and can afford to leave Panama when required. You should remember, however, that this is Panama and stuff happens. If you don't like what you're hearing from a particular immigration official ask to speak with his/her boss - keep going until you get the answer you like.

Take care.

Thanks stxSteve. These land border crossings sound horrendous but no doubt it will be an experience!

It will also help if you speak Spanish. If Not, learn basic phrases, I suggest.
