Is it customary to tip taxi drivers in Panama City as we do in the United States?
No. Taxi drivers are rarely tipped. At that, it's usually just change. Those that inflate the zone fares, I never tip. However, when going to or coming from the airport, if a driver carries, loads and unloads my luggage I'll tip him $1. Or, if a driver does more than just get me from point A to point B, I'll tip.
Thank you! That helps.
I have used taxis extensively for two years in Panama and have only tipped a driver maybe one out of 20 times. If they accept your price without squawking, are friendly, drive somewhat safely, maybe do something extra, or have to wait at our apartment for my wife I have given an extra dollar. If the traffic is heavy and they don't complain I have also tipped.
