Order of sites to visit

We will be arriving in Fuerte Amador on the cruise ship for the day and want to visit Miraflores Locks, Panama Vieja,Casco Viejo and Amador Caueway. Our ship gets in at 8:00 am on Saturday and leaves at 4:00 AM on Sunday. Can you please tell me what order we should visit these sites in and do you think we will be able to fit it all in? We would like to take taxi cabs to the different sites. Are there cabs avaible at each site or should we think about hiring one for the day? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

You'll see the Amador Causeway when you disembark. I would go to Miralfores, first. You have the best chance of seeing ships going through the locks in the morning. They open at 9:00 and I would plan on taking 2 hours there. Next, go across town to Panamá Viejo. Traffic should be lighter around 11:00. It will take you about 45 minutes to tour the ruins. Then, either go to the museum (another 30 minutes) or go straight to Casco Viejo, have some lunch around Independence Square and tour that area. It's just a short distance (10 minutes without traffic -- up to 45 minutes when traffic is bad) from Casco Viejo to Amador and your ship.

Thank you for your information. Do you think we should hire a taxi for the day or will there be taxi's at all the different sites we want to visit once we are finished visiting?

Thanks again for your help.

There will be taxis available at the sites. Don't pay any more than $5 to go from Amador to Miraflores. Even that is a gringo "rip-off rate." The actual fare for two people should be $2.75. While most TA contributors recommend asking the fare price before getting in the cab, a few have recommended not asking at all and just handing the driver the exact, correct amount when exiting the cab.

The driver is required to have a zone map in the car, which has a price table. Basically, it works with a base price of $1.20. Add $.50 for each additional passenger and $.35 per zone crossed ... $.25 per subzone.

Going from Miraflores to Panama Viejo don't pay more than $10. The correct fare for two should be $5.90. From Panama Viejo to Casco Viejo pay no more than $6.00. The correct fare should be $4.55. And, from Casco Viejo back to Amador, pay no more than $4. The correct fare should be $2.05.
