Buying a car in Panama City

I am a 22 year old Australian travelling with 2 friends from Panama to mexico in June through to November. We plan on surfing the Pacific coast and would love to have our own car to do so. We are looking to spend between $4000 to $6000 and preferably get a 4wd. Would love any advice on where to buy a car off other travellers or where to find cars with American or Mexican number plates so we can sell it at the end of our trip. I am aware the paper work can be a huge hassle but are prepared to deal with it to find some less crowded waves. Would love any advice or tips thanks for the help

You would have a hard time selling a car bought in Panama in the US - best to try and sell it in Mexico - cars are not cheap in Panama and used ones a lot of times are in bad shape - you are opening yourself up to getting ripped off - unless you can buy a car from an ex=pat moving back to the States ( check Craigslist) be very careful ( careful with craigslist too).

Big surfing community in Bocas - maybe best to try to hook up with fellow surfers there for ideas, although in Bocas most don't have cars - people get around by boat.

Your idea has a lot of holes in it - you might be better off renting - owning a car in Panama can be a pain, not having the right papers when the cops pull you over can get expensive, getting ripped off when buying a car is a distinct possibilty
