Best neighborhood for hotel, two women travelers

We'd love to stay in the Casco Viejo but I seem to be finding a dichotomy of lodging--either there are very pricey boutique hotels or low-end, bare bones backpacker hostels. Nothing in the middle. Am I missing something?

Since the boutique hotels are more than I'd like to pay, what other neighborhood in the city should I look at? We're looking to stay four days, would like to see the Canal, Casco Viejo, the Mercado de Mariscos, downtown, just general sightseeing to fill up four days.

Thanks.

From my Blog // The Hotel Las Vegas is right in the middle of the upscale Congrejo neighborhood. This area centrally located in the City and within walking distance to shopping areas, restaurants, schools, pharmacies, and several banks. It is a classy area and many of Panama´s most influential have made their permanent residences in this area.

My arrival at the hotel was smooth. A valet attendant [a soft-spoken regular chap – not a “Fancy Uniform” type] – greeted me and took my bag inside. The Front Desk also greeted me, took my Credit Card information, I was shown up to my room – and there I was, feeling very comfortable and happy and serene. The hotel was nice. Downstairs is the Italian restaurant -. Pomodoro. It has a small enclosed dining room [for when it is drizzling] – and a large open dining area with trees and flowers– and is arguably the best Italian food in town [the Tiramisu is World Class]. Also in the hotel is The Wine Bar. A place for wine lovers, the Wine Bar has more than 300 wine selections as well as cheese, pizza [The Small Hawaiian pizza with a glass –or two- of a good Chianti, is my choice]., and an in-house live music trio.

The hotel is right on the corner – cattycorner to the Veneto Hotel & Casino – Wyndham Grand Hotel. The Veneto is a good place to relax –– have a fine Cuban cigar and a cool drink while you watch an NFL game on Sunday ///// http://thepanamatraveler.blogspot.com/

My wife and I stayed at the Toscanna Inn in Congrejo in September. It is a nice hotel, reasonably priced. A very good buffet breakfast is included with the room and they will fix you a sack breakfast to go if you are leaving early for a tour. The staff were very nice and helpful. The restaurant in the hotel serves Panamanian food and is pretty good. I did a review of our stay if you are interested in more information.

There are many good restaurants and stores nearby. We walked all over the neighborhood, including after dark, and never were concerned about safety.

I was not that impressed by Casco Viejo. There are relatively few places to stay and few restaurants, with many vacant buildings and much construction. Perhaps in a few years after more reconstruction it will be better. However, I am probably spoiled after visiting and staying in the Old City in Cartagena, Colombia.

Thanks everyone. I narrowed it down to two hotels, posted a new thread with them both and because I got so many pro-Casco Viejo posts in that thread, booked the CV hotel. I love the looks of that area, and several of the things we want to do are in walking distance of the CV, so we're going to give it a shot. Wish us luck. :)
