Yellow Fever

Our doctor is recommending that we get a vaccine for yellow fever for our visit to Panama. We will only be in Panama 6 days and we are staying in Panama City. We do plan on a couple tours outside of the city but no major jungle hikes. The vaccine is not covered by insurance and is not cheap, over $100 each. Is yellow fever a problem in Panama?

Yellow fever hasn't been a problem in Panama for decades. Your doctor (and you) need to read the CDC website about health concerns in Panama. Yellow fever is not one of them, unless you go deep into the Darien, which is not anywhere close to Panama City. You don't have to worry about Malaria, either. The only possible mosquito borne illness is Dengue Fever. For which there is no vaccine. Just use mosquito repellent if you're concerned.

Surprisingly (to me anyway) the CDC does recommend YFV vaccination if traveling East of the Canal Zone, but not West.

As it has been said, unless you're getting deep into the jungle (Darién sounds about right), you won't need this vaccine.

The only other reason I can think of is if you'll be traveling to Southeast Asia soon after your visit to Panama, as some countries require having that vaccine if you have visited certain tropical countries in the Americas or Africa.

"Not recommended for travelers whose itineraries are limited to areas west of the Canal Zone, the city of Panama, the Canal Zone itself, the San Blas Islands, and the Balboa Islands"

On the other hand, Panama does require the vaccine for travellers coming in from countries with endemic yellow fever.
