Winthrop / Augusta Thanksgiving To-Do?

We will be in the area for only 2 days looking for an activity to do. One of our days will be with family. The other day will be free. Any ideas?

Maine State Museum, Augusta (check Holiday hours).

Strolling historic riverfront city of Hallowell. Antique shops, boutiques, galleries (and good restaurants).

A "day trip" drive to the Coast...Belfast via Rte 3...Rockland/Camden via Rte 17...or Boothbay/Damariscotta via Rte 27.

Great tips! Thanks.

How about any seasonal "outdoorsy" types of activities unique to the Maine region?

Thanksgiving weekend activities are generally weather-dependent.... and the current forecast calls for eight-to-ten inches of snow between Tuesday night and Wednesday night....then clearing and warming up for the rest of the weekend....

Bottom line is that snow will likely be rather deep for casual hiking until at least Saturday or Sunday....if we get what's forecast and it melts that quickly... On the other hand, that's not really enough dependable snow for activities like cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing....

The other major Thanksgiving weekend activity in many parts of the state is deer hunting -- the regular firearms hunting season ends on Saturday of the Thanksgiving Day weekend.... suggesting extreme caution for any activity involving being out in the woods between now and then.

If you were looking for "outdoorsy things" like apple picking, pumpkin patches, etc., it's too late in the year for things like that -- our freak snowstorm a couple of weeks ago put an end to that kind of activity....

For many of us, the Thanksgiving weekend means taking a walk after our big meal on Thursday, then spending Friday and Saturday either shopping (for those crazy enough to face the Black Friday crowds), or finishing last-minute prep for winter (splitting firewood, last-minute yard or garden chores, tuning up snowblowers or plow equipment, etc.

Think the suggestions you got from HD are really pretty good ones for the greater Augusta area this time of year....

MainerOnTheGo outlined the problem with outdoor activities for this weekend. Should you venture into the woods, please wear two items with florescent orange coloring. However, you may find geocache locations that aren't in hunting locations if that appeals to you:
