Ideas for a stopover between Bar Harbor and White Mountains

We're planning a trip to New England in the Fall, and need to get from Bar Harbour to The White Mountains (North Conway). Any ideas for a overnight stop half way?

Our travel agent suggested Augusta, but there isn't an awful lot to do there. We're a couple in our 50s, no kids with us. A bed and breakfast would be ideal - something with a bit of character rather than a chain.

Things to do also welcome.

You could try Bethel, Maine.

But, really, it's only a five hour drive.

Or you could try this, a little out of your way:

Or Poland Springs, Maine.

Keith --

Unless you go a long ways out of your way, there are no big (or even moderate-sized) cities on the most-used routes between Bar Harbor and the White Mountains.... But lots of small towns where folks "make their own fun" --- so "best places to stop" will depend on what you consider "things to do"...

If you're looking for a nice little community with a few nice restaurants and some good opportunities for a scenic drive or a relaxing walk in a State Park, Bethel could be the spot for you. Drive over in the morning and still have time for an afternoon loop drive through Evans Notch to Fryeburg and back -- or a ride up through Grafton Notch State Park with a stop at Screw Auger Falls.... or just walk the village.

If you're looking for lots of commercial activities, multiple nightlife choices, etc., you might want to consider pushing through from Bar Harbor to North Conway in a single day. North Conway offers more dining choices, more places to enjoy a drink before or after dinner, and more commercialism than any of the communities along your route.

By the time you get to Bethel, you are basically on the edge of the White Mountains already.

Augusta isn't thought of much as a tourist destination, but it is the State Capital, and it does have quite a few museums and other interesting attractions.

As the others have mentioned....it is really a short drive from Bar Harbor to North Conway, easily doable in 1/2 a day.

You many want to consider stopping in Naples Maine, which we find to be so pretty. www.visitmaine.com/region/lakes/naples/ It is small, but the Songo River Queen II http://www.songoriverqueen.net/ riverboat has cruises of the lake, which you may find enjoyable. There are at least 3 B&Bs listed on TA in Naples, with great reviews.

You are only an hr away from North Conway, but the drive through route 302 is very scenic, especially in the fall. Depending on when you are planning on travelling, you should be making your reservations now.

Thanks for the ideas guys. We've got everything booked now - we followed the general advice and decided to stay a day longer in Bar Harbor and skip Augusta.

Now we just have to hope for reasonnable weather ;-)

KC. Thanks. Some different ideas there.

We are booking through a local travel agent and when we said we wanted to go to New England she was really excited ... because she'd never set up a trip to there before :-} New York, LA, New Orleans, Grand Canyon was no problem ... but New England ... well at least she new where it was.

Looking forward to a great holiday.
