September is a great time to visit Nantucket. Just about everything is open and there are plenty of people there, but nothing like the madhouse and traffic congestion of July and August. Many of the families with school children will be gone, but a lot of young couples, retirees and empty-nesters actually prefer September. We even enjoy the first week of October sometimes. The only thing is, there won't be any life guards at the beaches after Labor Day, although you can go on the beaches if you want. The island doesn't really wind down until after Columbus day, with a renewal during the week after Thanksgiving ("Christmas Stroll" week).

Nantucket in the fall is almost heartbreakingly beautiful. When the leaves turn red and orange against the bright blue skies, it is just breathtaking. The water will still be warm. Everyone will be relaxed and most of the drunken, hung over fools will be imbibing elsewhere. Unless you realy like pushy loudmouths, the fall is a far better time to visit the Grey Lady. Have fun...
