Bank machines

I'm planning a trip to Antigua in April, and was just wondering what the status is with bank machines there. Is there a lot, or are they specific to certain locations?

There are quite a few around Parque Central in the middle of town. Offhand, I can remember at least 4 machines at different banks.

Hi there, back in december there was a shortage of paper currency due to unexpected high demand during the holidays and some of the banks run out of paper money. Consequently the ATM's were empty. Now the situation is pretty much back to normal as the new paper currency has finally arrived in the country, and all the ATM's have been resupplied. Believe it or not, In guatemala you find a bank at almost every corner. There are plenty ofATM's around the country including small towns. Credit cards, US dollars, and Travellers checks are widely accepted also. Good luck.

Be aware that Travel Checks are VERY difficult to cash, due to excesive fraud the Guatemalan banks are reluctant to accept them, if you decide to take travelers checks use ONLY AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVELERS CHECKS, because they are the only ones that have a 24hrs office open to guarantee to the bussiness accepting them that the check is good and will be not treat as lost or stolen, once they give approval on the check the check owner can not declare them lost or stolen, THIS IS VERY REAL, many people ends up from bank to bank trying to exchange their checks when they are not form AMEX. Is also true that is easier to pay with a traveler check then to try to exchange it for cash.
