Traveling from Antigua to Panajachel

Can anyone give me information on the best way to get from Antigua to Panajachel? Any information on cost, recommended travel companies to use etc would be greatly appreciated.

Any travel office -- there are lots of them -- or probably your hotel can book you on one of the shuttles to Pana. Takes a couple of hours depending upon traffic. Haven't done it in a couple of years, but think the cost is around $20.

We asked the owners of our accommodation to organize a shuttle. It arrived exactly on time and cost $10.00 each from Antigua to San Pedro. Pana should be the same or less as it is closer to Antigua. There are various shuttle operators throughout Antiqua, just ask someone to refer you to one they have used. Shouldn't have any troubles.

There are dozens of shuttles arranged by dozens of travel agents throughout both towns. You will be able to haggle a price down to as little as $6 each way.

A word of warning if it matters to you - the British Foreign Office advises against the cross country route as minibuses can be hi-jacked and advises using the motorway route. Minibuses travel on both routes but we asked when booking in both directions which way we would be going and were told the motorway but we ended up on the scenic cross country route. A minibus was hijacked the day before and valuables stolen from tourists but nobody hurt.

We ended up dealing with Elizabeth Bell, because we took her 1/2 day walking tour. She booked some of our shuttles and that worked out really well for us. For the shuttle from Pana back to Antigua, we just dropped by the Atitrans office in Pana to make the arrangements.

Would you recommend the tour with Elizabeth Bell? What about the other guide that works with her? Lastly, we are only going to be in Antigua for a total of 3 nights. Would you suggest taking the time to visit Panajacel or just stay and enjoy Antigua? Love all suggestions!

The British Foreign Office is probably basing its advise on an isolated case, because as far as I know all the shuttles take the Pan American Highway which is a well trvelled route with construction work as we speak because is being expanded to four lanes. Good luck
