English Speaking Doctor in Antigua Guatemala

Hi everyboby ,

My name is Paul Komich. Recently I went to discover Guatemala by road. My visit last 3 weeks and I visited Panajachel, Tikal, Pacific coast, Guatemala city, And Antigua Guatemala.

During this time I got sick, this time with a bad Gastroenteritis wich is a bad diarrhea with fever, nausea and vomits. My wife looked in the internet and there is several names of doctors and clinics. We decided to play safe and I bet for the one who is recommended by Allianz, a good insurance company. He is fluent in english and french, trained abroad and does house calls. His name is Oscar Asturias, M.D. Cellphone 48603217 and has very high standars in medical services. I recommended without doubt.

Hope this will be useful for other travelers visiting Guatemala.

Paul K.

I am glad you found a good doctor that served your needs. Your situation was an emergency, but many people have found traveling to Guatemala for "planned medical visits" saves a lot of money for those with no medical insurance, and even some that do have insurance. This is one of many reasons we now live in Guatemala.

Very high quality care is available at a 80% discount over USA prices. There is a great organization that helps find and refer doctors for any procedure. www.guatemalamedicaltravel.com.

Hmm, seems to be an unusual amount of first-time posters all recommending this same doctor--under different screen names but with the same info and the same spelling and grammar issues.

I agree with Schilke about the authenticity of these posts.

However I am in Antigua now and have just been to the best English speaking doctor.

His name is Marco Bocaletti

Address - 3a Avenida Norte, No.1 Appt 3

Telefono - (502) 7832 4835

Email - bocaletti@hotmail.com

His English is perfect and I would have to say he is better than my doctor at home. I went to see him about some gastro problems I was having and he gave me advise about a condition I have had for years. He also was very thorough about allergies to medicines and informed my girlfriend of the actual names of the medicines she was allergic to, which is helpful if we have to see any more doctors in Latin America.

He is only open from 3pm - 6pm Mon - Fri and by appointment on Sat.

We also went to an English Speaking Doctor in San Cristobel in Mexico and he wasnt thorough at all. He just prescribed us some medicines which didnt help. Marco has sent us off to get tests and we have another appointment with him today.

An Appointment cost $32 US, which is a bit of money in Antigua, but we have been feeling ill for a month now so it is money well spent.

Highly recommended. If he moved to NZ I would change doctors.

Agree with Christopher. We used the services of Dr Bocaletti in 2010. His care was very appropriate and thorough. Did not think the cost too high for the quality of care. Would definitely return to him if we needed a doctor.

Re: Dr. Antonio Bocaletti, Antigua Guatemala.

I had to visit Dr. Bocaletti after injuring a toe a couple of weeks earlier in Honduras and subsequently developing an infection. He was very thorough and professional. He prescribed antibiotics and asked me to follow up in a few days. I was impressed to say the least.

If you need a doctor while in or around Antigua, he's your guy.

Yes, I had that problem as well. He will answer when he's in the office which as I recall is 3-6pm. This is a satellite office for him. He has another office elsewhere.

However, he will respond to email during other times.

Try: bocaletti@hotmail.com

Ah yes more sage words from another armchair traveller who has likely traveled very little outside his/her area code.

Everyone is a first time poster at some point. I spend very little time on the computer, however when I needed a doctor in Antigua, I chose a resource which was available to me and that was this forum. I felt my experience with this doctor was positive and that other travellers may benefit from it.

As it turned out Dr. Bocaletti's office was about a block and half from our hotel. He was very professional and thorough. If he were in my city in Canada, I'd have him as my doctor.

Not everybody has an agenda as you insinuate. If this forum is the last place you'd look for a doctor, fine. Stay sick or hurt or ?? until you find help that suits you. Who cares? If you don't have a dog in this fight, stay the hell out of the way. Since when is your opinion worth anything to begin with? Don't poison it for other people that actually need help.
