We recently spent the day in tecpan --an hour from antigua--with claudia, a fabulous guide and partner in this birding and wildlife expert company. We went to see the pink headed warblers and Claudia found an abundance along with the beautiful mountain trogans, as well as many other warblers and other birds. She was patient, thorough and considerate of our bad knees. While we love birding, I can rarely pick out birds by their call, or imitate the call to bring them closer. Claudia was great at this.
Cayaya offers to make arrangements for independent birders. We try to do nearly everything ourselves, but every recommendation she made has been perfect so far. Claudia and her partner Knut seemed to have trained many of the birding guides and supported many of the nice ecolodges here in Guatemala. This is our first time birding here in Guatemala but we'll be back. Also recommend birding finca filadelphia. We had their wonderful guide Roberto, trained by cayaya. Although we went on a super windy and cold day--making it birding unfriendly--we still had a marvelous time and some great sightings at above 7000 ft. Wear warm clothes.
