guides or self walking tour of antigua

Do I need to go on a guided tour to avoid getting lost and missing the bus back to a cruise ship. I can't tell how complicated antigua is from the maps I have.

My recommendation would be to take a tour, not becuase you may get lost, but rather because it is hard to know what you are seeing and the history behind it. I did a tour at the end of two weeks and learned much about Guatemala as a country, as well as Antigua. By western standards every thing is reasonably priced. My personal more altrusitc side, believes that it is good to give to people who are working, in poor third world countries, in particular.

Guatemala has the fourth highest famine rate in the world.

Before you get off the bus, ask him where he is going to park the bus, and make a note of it. If you do not manage to find your way back to the bus, you can always jump in a tuk-tuk (they are all over Antigua and you will see them pass by you frequently), tell him where the bus is, and he will take you there. Antigua is really quite small, and is laid out in a grid pattern, making everything easy to find. The avenidas go north and south, and the calles go east and west. The city is only ten blocks square. It's hard to get lost. In order to hail a tuk-tuk, just wave your hand at it when you see one coming your way. Single journeys within Antigua city limits cost between Q10 and Q15. Enjoy your visit to Antigua; it is a very nice colonial city.
