Hello Bruce,

Right inside Sea terminal building you will find ATM and couple exchange offices of the banks. Taxi drivers will be happy to get EUR but it's better to have local currency

...because it is also illegal to pay in anything but hryvnya (Ukrainian currency) on the territory of Ukraine for the majority of domestic goods and services.

And that includes restaurants/taxi.

Have a great trip, Bruce4fun!

hi Bruce4fun,

The exchange rate in the seaport offices are really bad. You will find the better deal in the city itself. On the main street, Deribasovskaya, there are plenty of exchange places, you will recognize them by big yellow billboards, stating the daily exchange rate. There are many ATMs there, too. You can pay by credit card in restaurants and stores, if you decide to do it, notify your bank before you travel, or they will decide that your card was stolen, and can froze it. Also ask them what foreign processing fees they charge, if any. Many of the banks do.

I just called my bank, Bank of America, and checked on fees and card usage.

Using my card for a purchase has a 3% Conversion Fee

Using an ATM has a 1% Conversion Fee

So they recommend using your card to get money from the ATM and paying cash instead of using your card for the purchase, since you'll be paying 3 times as much in fees.

Other banks may (probably) charge different fees.
