Need a car on island trips from Split?

Hi

Visiting Split for a week in August.

We are a family on 4 ( 4 adults-children are 18 and 21)

Keen to see the islands. We are hiring a car for the week. Will we need it to explore the islands or cn you go as foot passengers and then walk?

Never been before so unsure where to visit and how.

Include your complete itinerary details, as it is unclear if you will need a car at all without that info.

While it can be good to have a car if you are on an island for several days, for just a day trip, I would not bother with the queuing and extra expense, especially in bustling August. That also allows you to take passenger-only catamarans.

See car ferry and catamaran schedules at https://www.jadrolinija.hr/

We don't have an itinerary yet.

Open to all suggestions. Probably Hvar is the main option after reading some of the TA suggestions.

Short answer is it depends. On the one hand, some of the islands are large and you can cover a lot of territory, but again in August, things will be so hectic, there is the appeal of just hopping off a catamaran and hanging out.

I would avoid Hvar town in August. If you take the car ferry, you will disembark at Stari Grad, and I would drive anywhere other than near Hvar town.

As LuvGoin said, depends on what you want to do. If you just want to visit one or 2 towns on island, you don't need a car. If you want to explore the island even for a day, IMO you need a car.

I did coupe, day trips to couple islands in Zadar region. I wouldn't have been able to explore those islands without a car and for me, that would have been a waste of a day.

Another option is a 6 island day excursion, that also includes couple caves. A number of companies do it. I did it with Waterworld Croatia and was very happy with it. It is expensive for 4 people though.

You need to sort out your itinerary and only then will you know what will be best option(s).

Because getting accommodation at Hvar (or Brac) in full summer season IS becoming a problem, having a car can be a good option that you cover the whole island in one day. Take Split-Stari Grad ferry in one direction, Sucuraj-Drvenik in another and drive back to Split either on the coastal road or motorway. Similar with Brac - Split-Supetar, and Sumartin-Makarska ferries

Research Vis...much quieter. Further from Split but worth it. A car or scooter is essential for exploring.

For Hvar just take the catamaran there and leave the car in Split.
