One day in Split!

We have 24hrs in split before we start a 7 day sailing trip.

Ive got a few questions you all might be able to help with!

1) we will be flying in - whats the best way to get into town? taxi/bus etc?

2) Im looking for somewhere to stay thats central to the main things we would want to see & places to eat etc thats under 600 kuna a night. Our sailing trip departs from opposite the main bus terminal the next day so something near that could also be handy! anyone have any recommendations?

3) with 24hrs (we fly in at 9am & our sailing starts at 1pm the next day) what would be the 'must see/do's? Or great places for dinner/lunch - nothing fancy - just great local food!

Thanks in advance!

There are buses to take you into the city for $7, about 30kn. Always there for all flights. Croatia Airlines runs the service, but you do not have to be flying Croatia Airlines to use their buses. As you exit the terminal, go to your right, down the driveway and on your right there they are! Takes about 45 minutes and the bus terminal is directly opposite the ferry terminal in the port. A gaggle of grannies meets all of these buses with photos of their apartments and rooms, Never had anyone tell me they got ripped off. Just check them all out, for a night, it's cheap, friendly and close by. And as a single woman, they will take good care of you! For $100 a night, you may find it tough in season to get a hotel room...but lots of hostels with private bathrooms may be an option. Lots of them in town, which is very compact so you will never be more than 15 min. away from the port. The city's official website is www.visitsplit.com The main attraction is of course the 1,700 year old palace of Diocletian, actually a walled summer fortress/villa, a lot of which is still intact, but it's the layers of history on top of the Roman remains and the fact that 3000 people still live inisde these walls that make the palace such a fabulous place. Rent a bike after your walking tour and rideup to Marjan Hill...forestred park, with rocky beaches so you can swim...or the town's sandy beach at Bacvice, a short10 minute walk up the hill that starts to the right of where the airport bus leaves you off, parallel to the train tracks, just walk up and over the tracks and the beach is below...check out the open air fish market, the great open air Green Market *at either end of the Palace....pick up a free copy of DiscoverSplit, the English language tourist newspaper with a walking map of the Palace....and be sure your cabin onboard is NOT below deck or you will fry....opt for deck or above deck cabins where the air is cooler!

Try AirBnb for accommodation https://www.airbnb.com.au/s/Split--Croatia… Stay close to, or in, Diocletian's Palace. It's incredible, there's lots of choice for restaurants.

Thanks so much for all the info!

Will check it all out in detail :) I have just jumped on booking.com & booked a studio that was very affordable 70E & gets great reviews so that should do us fine! Funny you should say that about the boat because we were told below deck would be better as its cooler down there! Strange! But all the cabins have air con so here's hoping it works - or perhaps I should change it to an above deck one??

It depends if power is on - you often need to be moored up to access it.
