1,5 weeks in Split area with a 9 year old - ideas?...:)

Hi me and my son we are flying to Croatia in the second half of August.

The idea is to find a place with nice beaches not far from Split as a "base" and travel from it to the child-friendly islands/other attractions. Would Trogir be better than Split in this sense? Or we will have to go to Split anyway for the ferries?

I also heard that you can't do island trips in a day, so have to stay overnight...is this true?

So what islands are child-friendly (Vis, Brac...)? Do the ferries go only from Split? What are the attractions you could advise for a 9 year old?

Thank you!

Lots of posts on this subject from previous years! Split is the best city for day trips on ferries.

Very frequent service to Brac and Hvar. Vis requires an overnight. The whole country is "child friendly" since there are lots of locals with kids! If he or she can ride a bike, then you can actually go to an island and rent bikes and ride around, swim, sightsee....lots of places to drop in for pizza, ice cream, etc. In Split proper, Marjan Hill is a huge park, rent a bike, walk, swim, relax. Down the coast is Omis, with an animatronic Dino Park, great for kids, the town itself is also lots of fun, swim, climb up to the rocky overlooks in the old town....take a "fish picnic" boat to Brac. Omis is also the whitewater rafting area.....he or she is probably old enough, it;s a very safe but exciting trip, mild rapids, done in a big raft with a professional guide and 8 people.....fun! An hour up the coast is Krka National Park, easy hiking, swim under a real waterfall, fascinating restored water-powered machines in an ethno area inside the park. At the mouth of the Krka River where it meets the sea and you get on a launch to go to the park is the charming town of Skradin as well. 20 minutes north is Klis Fortress, wonderful ancient fort to climb around with a stupendous view back to the city....go before sunset. At City Center One, a mall complex in Split, there is a large go kart track if he or she likes this kind of thing...and of course inside, a Cineplex that shows firstrun Englishlanguage movies and in summer, sure to be the kind 9 year olds like. And there is a McDonalds here too, the only one, in a mall called Joker, walking distance from the Old Town. All of these places can be accessed by the excellent bus system here: #60 to Omis two and sometimes three times an hour; bus to Klis once an hour; to Krka less direct, first go to Sibenik then back to Skradin. Cars can be rented for $50-75 a day, very easy driving, two lane roads down and up the coast....superhighways with tolls, but since locals dont like to pay tolls, blissfully uncrowded so you can move really fast between cities. So there you have it, ferries, bike riding, adventure fun, and more. You will have a great time and so will the 9 year old...especially if he or she loves soccer!

just to name few daily trips from split, worth going:

Bol - most famous beach on island Brač, lot's of activities for children too

Trogir, Solin (Salona ruins), National Park Krka, Rafting on river Cetina...

If you want to experience NP Plitvice, island Hvar, Vis or Korčula, you will need to stay over night, because the ferry rides take too long. Well maybe you could see city Hvar in a day if you are lucky to get a 9am fast-boat ticket and catch a 7pm ride back...

You do have to be in Split if you want to use the ferries easily, but it's a big city so you may want to bear that in mind. Trogir is much smaller and you can get trips to places but not the immediate access of the public ferries & catamarans.
