When we decided to go to Dubrovnik for a week at the end of May, we set a budget and emailed a number of apartment owners from Lettings.com & Trip Advisor with our budget and asked if anyone could accommodate. We received a reply from Nedo Kalecija to say that he could accommodate us in the Sara apartments. (Email Below)

From the start we had slight misgivings as any contact with him had to be made by us, if we asked a question he didn’t reply and we had to call him for the answers. Before or during our whole stay he didn’t ring or text us once regarding any details or confirmations even though he said he would, we did all the calling. Also the deposit for the apartment was paid into a different account name and although we asked on numerous occasions, we never got a reply from him to say whether he had received the deposit or not. Even as we landed in Dubrovnik we still didn’t have a clue if the money we transferred nearly 2 month ago had reached his account or not. During our correspondence with him, we gave our flight times and as the flight home was at 20.25 we asked if we could have a late check-out, he said this was not a problem. (Email Below)

We arrived in Dubrovnik in the evening and called Nedo to let him know that we had arrived; he answered our call by saying that the Sara Apartment had a problem with plumbing, when we met him he then said had made an error and double booked the apartment that we had paid the deposit for and were supposed to be staying in, then a few minutes later he said there was fire damage in one of the apartments. Nedo and another gentleman asked us if we would like them to take our cases while we waited & he sorted out some other accommodation – we obviously declined! He then proceeded to take us to a restaurant – again we were asked if we would like our cases taken inside out of the way – we declined and kept them with us. After around an hour and half, Nedo returned to tell us he had found more accommodation for us and that we should follow him there. He took us to the Madrid Apartments which were to the standard of the Sara apartments that we had originally booked into however he told us that we could only stay there for one night as this apartment was booked out from the next day, he said that he would return the following day at 11.00am and would take us to another apartment.
The next day he arrived at 11.30 which meant we had spent half of the first day sat inside waiting for him. He told us that he had found an apartment that was to the same standard as the one we were in but had its own terrace but was unfortunately situated outside of the city walls. He said that we needed to pay him the balance we owed for the apartment as he needed to pay for the one we would be moving to. We were told by him that we could return to the original Sara apartments on the Sunday, which meant staying in another apartment for 4 nights.
We were handed over to a lovely lady called Rosa who proceeded to take us to the Bondi apartments. The only way to describe these apartments is to say that they are a hostel. We were offered a choice of rooms to stay in and taking into consideration that the bottom floor looked straight out onto an alleyway, we chose the upstairs room. This however meant we had to use the bathroom on the floor below that was to be shared with other people. To take a shower had to be co-ordinated with military precision as the hot water lasted less than 5 minutes.
On Sunday as promised although half an hour late, Nedo collected us from the Bondi apartments and took us to the Sara Apartments, for 2 nights we instantly we went from no stars to 5 stars which is what we had booked and expected to stay in for the whole week.
On the day we were due to check out, we got a knock on the door and 10.00am and were told we had to leave by a lady that had come to clean, we explained to her that we had cleared it with Nedo that we had a late check-out due to having an evening flight, she said she would call him and come back later. She arrived back after 5 minutes and passed a phone over for us to speak to Nedo regarding the late check-out. we were then told by Nedo that we must leave the apartment straight away as he had people coming to stay in there, we explained about the late check-out that we agreed right at the very beginning and the fact that we had been messed about since arriving in Dubrovnik, he said that he had given us the apartment at a lower rate than he normally would have done and that the Bondi Apartment was the standard expected for the money we paid. We explained to him that he answered us when we gave our budget to say that this price was ok but he refused to take responsibility for anything. He told us the apartment was his and “please leave my apartment” We were literally kicked out!
The cleaning lady who we found out was his Mother, then took us back to the Madrid apartments and told us to put our cases in the cleaning cupboard and that Nedo would meet us back there at 17.30 so that we could get our cases back. For the first time that week, he was actually on time!
It takes 12 months to save and plan for a holiday and only a week for it to be ruined due to what can only be described as appalling management.
The Sara Apartment is located in the old town which is perfect. The apartment itself is done to a really nice standard. The only reason we would stay away is having to deal with Nedo Kalecija. We must stress that Nedo was very polite and never lost his temper or was never rude in anyway. He is a young man who needs a lesson in customer service
