Dubrovnik to Split by car

We will need to get from Dubrovnik to Split and are considering renting a car. Two questions:

1) Recommendation on a rental car company that allows you to have an inexpensive one-way rental?

2) Recommendations on what to see along the way?

Most companies won't nail you on a one way rental so search around.....maybe someone else can help you with a company they used recently. In terms of what to see on the way......you could stop in Ston on the way for a good seafood meal and maybe walk the walls there...there will also be many photo opps along the way since the views on the coastal road are absolutely magnificent....the only bad thing about driving is that the driver won't be able to partake in the great views since they will have to keep their eyes on the road.

Particuarly if you are collecting from one airport and dropping at another you are not charged highly. It's only if you leave the car in another country. Drive up the coast road - stop at Ston and Mali Ston as Barry suggests. Then stop in one of the small towns in Makarska such as Tucepi or Brela to see the sea and the mountains. Then stop at Omis and see the Cetina canyon.

Thanks! Any thoughts on implications of renting and returning at the ports rather than the airport?

There's less choice at the ports and the opening hours are shorter. Port or airport you'll probably have to pay a one way fee unless you are hiring for 3 days or more. Unless you are desperate to stop off at places en route I would get the bus.

www.fleet-rent.com has Dubrovnik and Split airports with a flat 400 KUNA or about $75,00 charge for 1 way drop off, the car fuel and all taxes should cost about the same so figure 150-200 dollars in total!

We just drove Hwy 8 from Split to Dubrovnik with a day stopover in Makarska Riviera. I had read some forums that the drive was congested and to avoid this and take the Freeway.

It was not congested and the road surface was in excellent shape, making the drive very pleasant! Great views and wonderful little towns pop up in every bay you come to. Lots of wonderful little places to stop and go for a swim along the way. Driving into and out of Bosnia was not trouble at all with our rental car.

Would highly recommend this route but like a previous post said, the driver misses most of the beauty and they need to pay very close attention to the road- it's very curvy and windy in some spots and there are some aggressive drivers who feel the need to overtake others on blind corners. For drivers- leave lots of room, go at your own pace and don't look at the scenery too much.

Nice report Dutch! You said it, great for passengers but driver realy got to keep your eye on the road!! Gues can not blame the local delivery, taxi, bus, limo drivers who do this route every working day...then the face to face traffic becomes more of a pain than a sight-seeing journey, so again to everyone as tourists takeyour time, enjoy the view, and yield to the local traffic!

Viamichelin.com usually does a good job of drive times and fuel costs...try that site.

ITs only about 220 kms so if you figure about 8 l per 100 kms thats about 18 litres of fuel. Diesel fuel or regular fuel are close to 2,00 USD per litre, so its about 36,00 USD!
