Best Stops Driving from Split to Dubrovnik

We will have a rental car for one day driving from Split to Dubrovnik in mid-September. What are the most interesting places to stop along the way for short visits/eating?

Stop at Ston for lunch, fresh mussels and other seafood choices here are excellent. Walk the old town walls and view the salt pans.

I was also going to say Ston....maybe also Omis or somewhere along the Makarska Riviera for some nice views of the Biokovo Mts next to the sea.

The wall around Ston looks like a great stop, so we'll definately do that. We won't have a GPS...is there good signage to get to Ston...just take D414 off D8?

Is there an easily accessible stop for the Cetina Canyon near Omis for views of the canyon?

Any particular town you recommend along the Makarska Riveira?

whilst in Ston (not Mali Ston), don't miss the Europe's oldest still standing and still operating traditional saltworks :) And the name of the game is oysters in Ston - it's a rather unique white meat oyster, farmed in crystal clear waters in the area ...

if you'd like to see something different than the sea, there's a small place of Vid (near Metkovic), at the River Neretva delta, with a small archaeological museum atop an ancient Roman site of Narona, with a great local restaurant just across the street (frogs, eels and local travarica grappa ... )

I am expecting 4 hours of travel time not including stops. We are in no hurry and want to enjoy the drive, stopping several times along the way as we will not have a car for the 4 days we are in Dubrovnik. Thanks for the input. Any other additional suggestions are appreciated.

On our way from split we were trying to use motorway but ended up on coast road and had to go inland to join motorway. amazing road hugging mountain edge.made me realise how beautiful and mountainous croatia Is. Others may have more organised inland trip detours?

well, you can get to Ploce/Metkovic, take a ferry to Peljesac peninsula (wineyards!), drive to Orebic and take a short and frequent ferry to Korcula (town and island), have lunch there, sightseeing, continue to Ston, then Dubrovnik... Or you can hop on a ferry to Korcula island from Split, and continue towards Dubrovnik...
