Can anyone recommend reasonably priced car hire from Zadar airport?

do NOT rent from Hertz. They are operating a scam. We rented a car through them through our flight carrier Ryanair. Our travel was at the end of May 2013. Unfortunately we paid with a bank debit card and not a credit card, as they would not allow us to pay with something other than the flight was booked with. Here are the problems we have had:

1. no car seat available as requested. Rented one from a neighboring car dealer. It looked like something that was thrown away in the 1980's and was not safe. Take your own car seat if you have children that need it.

2. they billed us not once, not twice, not three times but FOUR times for the car rental. Protests to Ryanair and Hertz International have been to no avail.

3. they billed us not once, but TWICE for putting in the wrong gasoline, then billed us again, saying we did not fill before returning the car. We did fill it up before turning it in, but they took our receipt so we have no proof.

we finally had to cancel the bank card so they would quit putting fraudulent charges on it. The bank will do nothing without receipts and are dragging their feet about canceling quadruple billing.

Here is my advice if you are planning to rent a car in Croatia

1. arrange for it from the US and use a credit card, not a debit card, that has some customer protection on it.

2. take your own car seat.

3. when you get the car, take a photo of the rental agent and the paperwork. Take a photo of all sides and inside of the car and the mileage. Make sure these are dated. Get copies of everything.

4. When you gas up the car for return, take a photo of yourself putting in the correct gas. Take a photo of the gas station and your receipt. Keep your receipt. Make the rental agency take a copy of they want it.

5. Take a photo all around and inside the car on return. Take a photo of the agent.

wishing we would have done this. What should have cost about $200 is costing thousands and countless hours of aggravation. Hertz Rental franchise at the Zadar airport is a giant canker sore on the beautiful face of Croatia.

I'm sorry to read this experience on Zadar airport. It's certeinly not a good pubblicity for Zadar and it's airport services.

Maybe you can find an alternative here.

Yes the Hertz-RyanAir story has an interesting familiarity to it as they are exclusive partners and take care of each other in these special ways. The new player on the market with a not so new staff is called Fleet rent at www.fleet-rent.com and are in all airports including Zadar. New 1,000 car fleet, yes it may be a bit more expensive but no horor stories like above, I have been involved over 25 years in the car rental business and only like to recomend firms who know wha the heck they are talking about, and not out to cheat the customer.
