There are also direct flights to Alexandria from London by BMI, from Vienna by Austrian, from Athens by Olympic and I think Lufthansa goes there as well.

If it's "cheap" flights you are after it's far easier to use Cairo airport as the choice of airlines is far greater. If you really want to arrive in Alex at any cost then use Alex, but note that Alex has two airports - Nozha and Borg elArab. I think BA and Olympic use Nozha which is great as it is only about 15 mins out of Alex. Borg elArab is used by Lufthansa and is just over an hour out of Alex.

I read somewhere that there were safety concerns about Alex airport. If this is no longer the case, so much the better.

Nozha airport has a short runway that is surounded by swamps. So, landing there needs a good pilot, but Borg El Arab Airport to which most of the big carriers fly is ok. Despite what some opinions called "safety concerns", there haven't been any known accidents in Nozha airport in the known past. I only read that thing in the Rough Guide to Egypt, but never heard it elsewhere. Until they opened the new airport, many European carriers including BA used to fly into Nozha. They would have not done that if there was any serious risk.
