Elephant treks near Luang Prabang - with a guide?

Hi, We (family of 5 with 3 young kids under 7 years) will be in Luang Prabang this July and are wondering if anyone can recommend where we could go on an elephant trek or training camp?

Has anyone been to these at all? Are the elephants well looked after?

How much would we expect to pay roughly for one day? Can anyone recommend a tour group to go with?

Thank you!

A friend visiting me last year went to the elephant park ran by Tigertrail, 20 mins from LP, and gave rave reviews - can't remember the rates but you can look at www.tigertrail-laos.com for info

I'd recommend Tiger Trails. Last month my partner and I did an overnight "Mahout" trip. We paid US$110 each which we felt was worth the experience. The elephants have been rescued from logging work and now live much more comfortable lives. We learnt how to be "mahouts" (carers). We were instructed on how to ride our own elephant (bareback) and given the opportunity to bath them in the river. The accommodation was clean and comfortable and the meals excellent. The lodge overlooks the mahout camp and the scenery is breathtaking. On day 2 there is an option for your return to town. We elected to kayak which took us about 4 hrs so I wouldn't recommend doing that with the kids. Tiger Trails charge more than the other tour companies as they return more back to the local communities and are eco-friendly (for example, they buy food for the elephants from local farmers as opposed to letting them just eat the jungle). They also do half day trips which might suit the children a bit better.
