I am going to Dubai and want to bring my fiance' to be an engagement ring. Will I have to pay tax on a gift? Will it be considered a gift, or does that even matter? If I have to pay tax how much will it be?
Not enough detail to give a full reply but in short no tax to pay
You need to check the customs regulations of your country. In many countries you have to pay VAT for gifts above a specific amount. This of course if you declare it or customs finds it.
Edited: 08 August 2013, 05:29Ah thank you. I'm not sure what details I could give that would help. I was going to buy an engagement ring in the U.S. and take it to Dubai and give it to her as a gift. I'd either have it in my pocket or carry on luggage. My price range is in the 2-3K area. I know Dubai is known for diamonds and jewelry, but I wont be staying there and I don't expect her to be there longer than 4-8 months. My local store will fix it and clean it for free and I'll get 100% vaule trade in for any trade ups.
I was getting a lot of mixed messages trying to find an answer online. I kept running into info that stated that any merchandise under 3000 aed would not be taxed. The whole duty free thing kinda confuses me too.
Anyway; I'm not sure if that helps clarify. Thank you for the response :D
