Caxton fx card or similar

Hi,

We are travelling to Dubai from UK shortly and looking for best way to take money. Looked at the international Caxtonfx card which seems to be quite good. Has anyone used one? Any thoughts etc....?

We changed some cash to Dirhams (for our arrival) and felt very ripped off by Thomas Cook.

We have used the Fairfx which operated by the same company as Caxton. Only use it to withdraw money from ATMs as I use a normal credit card for purchases.

What is your main reason for doing this ? Better exchange rate or lower transaction charges, or both ?

It's worth asking your bank about charges and current rates for using your UK cards here. Secondly, how much do you think you'll spend whilst on hols and how many transactions ? That will help you do the maths and determine whether it's worth the hassle or not.

There are other ways to buy dirhams in the UK, including the post office and online 'mail order' type services.

If you're only coming for a few days and not spending thousands, it may not be worth it.

In the past I've use local UAE prepaid Visa cards because of the v low transaction charges (e.g. free for puchases and a couple of dirhams to use the ATM). But these are loaded in AED so you still have to concern yourself with the exchange rate from sterling.

Hi have found the Caxton fx card to be excellent. Used the dollar card in the USA and world traveller elsewhere. Exchange rate is good and they don't charge for ATM withdrawals or commission for using. Don't use it as a deposit for check-in as it will lock all your money. It can also be charged up online using iPhone. A great card highly recommended.
