Trip Help Required!!

Four of us are coming to Dubai on our first trip in mid-August. We have been recommended the Al Barsha area hotels as they appear to be close to the metro and the mall. We are looking at The Ivory Grand Hotel Apartments, the Centro Barsha and the Media Rontana Barsha.

We are also told that the shopping areas are in Bur Dubai, so we have also zeroed in on Regent Plaza and Rose Garden Apartments in that area.

We are going to be in Dubai for 4 days...and plan to do the city tour, B. Khalifa, the desert safari and the cruise. Also intend to do some shopping - window and otherwise!! and explore the city on our own - by metro and by taxi.

Have so many queries...would be grateful if someone could guide us!!

1. Which of the above areas would be a better option to stay at keeping our trip plan in view?

2. Would it be cheaper for us as a group to take a taxi or use the metro to roam around?

3. How does the Marina cruise differ from the Dhow cruise?

4. Is gold jewellery cheaper at the airport or in the souks?

Would appreciate any help here...

Thanks so much in anticipation...

1. Not much difference, just suit your budget. Dubai is not such a large city, every place is accessible by cab within an average of 20-30 mins.

2. Metro - does not cover all of the city, it runs along two (Red & Green) lines. At most stations you have to walk a bit to and from metro station. Taxi gets you door to door, and for 4 it is just right and costwise not too much difference when you consider you will buy 4 tickets in metro. In the general compartment mostly you will stand in the Metro because it is generally runs full, whereas in a cab you are guaranteed your seat! You can try of course the 'Gold Class' in the metro at twice the normal price. That said, there are some areas you can go to by metro just for the experience of it. Timingwise, Metro does not run 24/7, taxis do.

3. Marina Cruise is usually about the location, which is the Dubai Marina area. Dhow Cruise is a description of the vessel (boat) which is the popular 'Dhow' (like a fishing boat, if you like) common in the Middle East.

4. Airport Duty Free Jewelry shops do not permit haggling, at souks you can negotiate. On a given day gold price (basic) is same all across Dubai, but making charges vary depending on source. This bit you can bargain and get marginal reductions. Purity of gold is guaranteed wherever you buy.

Thanks a lot Vasu8....that does give me a clearer picture.....so we now do not need to look for hotels that are right next door to the metro!! And even the ones at Al Barsha will work fine.

Thanks once again!!
