exchange rate in siem reap at the moment

Hi, can anyone let me know what the AUD and USD exchange rate at money changers is at the moment. We are trying to decide if we take Aussie dollars or US.

Thanks

Don't change either to riel ... you'll get plenty in your change (cash registers are pre-set to convert any cents amount in your change to riel at 4000:$1). We just use our ATM card (they spit out USD)and have long since stopped worrying about the fluctuations in currency exchange - holiday is too short to worry about something you can't control.

Everything for the visitor will be priced in USD. Don't forget to spend all the riel you get before leaving Cambodia - you can't convert it back to anything once you leave the country.

Given that money changers and banks all adjust their rate to at least two cents below the inter-day and daily X-Rates changes why worry about this?

You just 'shop around" and "test the rates" on offer before making any transaction.

You would be surprised at the "spread" of rates and how easily lazy/idle/ignorant tourists so quickly lose money on X-changes.

Best regards. Ian

1. You should bring US dollar

2. Dollar can be used any where in Cambodia, no need to change to local money.

3. Most people change at Free market (not at bank) : 1usd ~ 4000KHR

My advise, change some small amount (around 50usd) to local KHR for tips, buy small thing along traveling road, etc., Other keep USD to buy anything (the cost named in USD). If you pay them by local money, they will calculate around 4200KHR =1 USD, you lost 2nd time.

Actually getting KHR4000 is more theoretical than reality.

Roadside and other small vendors still use the street x rate of KHR4200.

What does have an impact on prices is negotiating the price in Khmer where you buy at local prices and other tourists pay at the rounded up price. Which in most cases is very little indeed given the very low prices of most products sold roadside.

An extra KHR2 per US$cent is hardly likely to get most people excited on a purchase frequently costing $1 or less. Real cheapskates may feel otherwise.

Best regards. Ian
