Just a few weeks ago I saw a press release from Explora Lodge which offered free transportation between El Calafate and the Lodge, which is about 200 miles from Punta Arenas. If your budget can handle it, the lodge is really first class, and they'll take you to Punta Arenas when you check out. More details here:
Also, http://www.chile-hotels.com/explora.htm has a US number -- 1-800-811-8829. I've stayed at Explora twice, but have no experience with the chile-hotels.com outfit. But I imagine they could make some suggestions, either for Explora or elsewhere.
Haven't used them but you can try...........http://www.bus-sur.cl/opensite/index.php?page=routes
Normal buses? Down there, there's no such thing<g>. But seriously, I was just pointing out that the final bus-sur.cl destination seems to be Puerto Natales, so the original poster would indeed have to make additional arrangements to get to Punta Arenas. But depending on his/her budget, maybe the free Explora Lodge van would be a consideration. Otherwise, it'll be a long day.
does anyone know if private car and driver available for hire..? any recommendations? We have doen it in northern chile and argentina as well and hired driver with car...and had great times ..stopping where we wanted and came and gone when we wished..was amazing both times. We also had the opportunity to learn a lot from our driver/guide about local interesting things, stops, food, culture animals etc..we made great friends and was a wonderful trip.
Thanks and Happy ,Safe Travels to all.
