Splendid China and Windows of the World

Hi there,

On insistence of Wife, added couple of days in Shenzhen to my upcoming Hong Kong and Macau trip. We arrive on 5th October 2014 at 4.00 PM and will be staying at St. Regis.

We just have one free day in Shenzhen - 6th Oct. I wanted to know if it is possible to complete Splendid China and Windows of the World on the same day - we are both fit and don't mind walking all day. - Would this be doable?

What is the best way to get to both these destinations from St. Regis - I believe St. Regis is close to subway station?.

Thanks

Splendid China and Windows on the World are both stops on the Shenzhen metro. (Both are on Line 1, one stop apart.) I don't know where the St. Regis is.

Suggest starting at Splendid China. It has two parts, one devoted to replicas of famous historic sites in China and the other part devoted to exhibits about China's minority cultures.

That's usually enough for me in one day. It's not just a matter of physical stamina, but of how much new material my mind can absorb at one time. But if you want more after that, Windows on the World is just one metro stop away.

We visited Windows of the World in 1993, on our first China trip, a memorable experience, IMHO, definitely an amazing and worthwhile experience, I still think about it after 20 years, hope to visit it again one of these days. All miniature replicas of the famous landmarks and historical sites from around the world, amazing workmanship and details lay out in a huge park ground.

We have visited most of these famous sites around the world, the real things, but somehow we loved the miniatures even more, easier, that is for sure. I forgot most places and things in 30 years of travel, but I do remember this park.

We ran into former President Richard Nixon in the Windows of the World park, just 2 feet from us; we turned around, "WOW! Mr. President!" First time we saw a President in person and so close, and we were admirers of Nixon. That explained all the long black Lincoln limos and tight security I saw at our Shenzhen hotel.

Yes both can easily be done in one day normally but do not expect to see much on this peak holiday in China as you'll be sharing the place with a ton of Chinese.

Better focus on Splendid China. I thought that Windows of the Wold was a waste of time unless you never have a chance to travel and see these structures in real.

I would not suggest you to visit Shenzhen just for a day and that too for WoW which is not a not-to-miss kind of attraction. WoW and Splendid China will absolutely pale in comparison with Hong Kong and Macau which you are visiting. Further as an Indian, you need to take China Visa which will be about INR 3000 each !! Do visit Shenzhen ONLY if you are interested in shopping. Do keep a minimum of 2.5 days in Shenzhen.

Further for going to WoW I suggest you to take first ferry to Shekou port (from Macau) and from there you can visit WoW by MRT (before you check in your hotel). This way you will save time and money.

Dear Amit, I require your views on Shenzen as by now you must have completed your trip. We will be travelling for 4 nights & 5 days at Honkkong. We plan to include either Macau or Shenzen for a day. Most of people suggested us shenzen for Windows of World & Spendid China saying Macau is more for Casinos . How about Schenzen visa. I read that that is also available on arrival at Hong Kong Airport . Please reply ASAP

@ Hetal P

Have a look at my reply, might help you in deciding. I have been to all the 3 places and as suggested by me above, visit Shenzhen only if you like to shop and do stay for 2+ days as you will be incurring much in Visa fees to mainland China.

For China you need to apply for visa here in India itself.

Regarding Macau, you are mistaken that it has only Casinos.

Lot of things in Macau too see and the best is House of Dancing Water. If you see it, it will be highlight of your trip. Have a look here.

I don't think you can go Splendid China and Windows of the World on the same day, too hurry up and tired. We once spent one day at Splendid China, from 10:00am to 5:00pm, walking and waking, very big and many activities inside. Two places on one day is too fast and will miss a lot interesting items.

Thank You for your help. Will drop Schenzen then & cover Macau. I have 5 days. So planned 1 day at Disney land , 1 day at Ocean Park, 1 day Local HK Sightseeing & Shopping, 1 Day for Lantanu Island, & 1 day at Macau. Do I miss something in this iteniary? Suggest me important things that I sould not miss.

At Disney Land also what is the best land from Tomorrow land, Toy Land etc. to be covered. We have a 3.5 yrs kid & as Disney is too vast, What all places to be covered first. we want to cover areas which my kid will enjoy

With only 5 days, I would not suggest you Shenzhen. I have written in my earlier post, do not miss HoDW @ Macau. Book the tickets.

I would suggest you to take a direct ferry to Macau first from HK airport itself. This way you will save time. You can book HoDW on day 1.

Thank u All, Also advice me what will be better to carry HKD from here, Withdraw from ATM over there or to use Credit Cards? Will using Crecit cards of Standard Chartered bank or HSBC provide advantage in lower transaction fees since both these banks are at Hongkong too. What will be cheapest mode to carry cash.

Also Suggest some good budget hotels at hongkong & Macau.

At Hongkong, is staying at Disney Hollywood hotel worth? Will it provide any advantage for entry to park?
