Chengdu Itinerary

Hi,

Planning our trip for our family with 3 kids this year to Chengdu and so far have the following:

Friday July 3 - fly in late arrive around 16:00 in Chengdu, Wenshu Fang Street, visit Wenshu Monastery

Saturday July 4 - Panda Breeding Center in early AM, Sanxingdui Museum in afternoon

Sunday July 5 - Day Trip to Leshan to see Big Buddha, back to Chengdu

Monday July 6 - Not sure what to do - any thoughts?, then flight out around 19:00 or 21:00

Would it be better to go to Panda Breeding Center Monday AM instead of Saturday? Just thinking about the crowds. But of course kids are so excited to see the pandas not sure if we could wait til the last day of our Chengdu trip.

Also should we hire a guide for our family of 5 or take public transportation?

Thanks for any suggestions.

It would be easier if you book a cab for a day to bring you to and from Panda Reserve and Sanxingdui. Cabs are cheap but can be difficult to hail on the streets. Ask your hotel concierge to help arrange.

Leshan is a nice day trip - there are buses fr Chengdu bus station to Leshan but they mostly don;t go directly to the Great Buddha so have to take cab fr Leshan bus stn which is on outskirts of town. If you don;t speak Mandarin, may have problems going on your own.

After you finish at the Panda centre you wont have a problem catching a cab. They are always dropping people off so you can pick one up easy. Just have someone write out Sanxingdui for you & get the taxi to wait at the museum & then get him to take you back to Chengdu. Have a price in mind rather that go by the meter. You could always hire him for the whole day and get him to take you to the Pandas ect & then back. Ask your hotel doorman to help.

If you wanted a guide then we really loved Fiona. She charges RMB100 per day but is well worth it. She can take you around to lots of different places & help with public transport. It is more like having a good friend with you rather than a guide as she is so nice. My daughter thought she was great & heaps of fun. fiona.hera@gmail.com

For the Monday another place you could look at would be Luodai old town. It's a village not far from Chengdu & we really liked it. It's very pretty and the area is closed to traffic so you can wander around. it will only take 1/2 day but would be easy to spend more time there.

Another place not far from Chengdu is Huanglong Xi. Once again it is an old village with a temple, old gates & you can do a bit of a river trip in a boat. very pretty - they filmed parts of Hidden Tiger, Crouching Dragon there.

Thank you all for the tips!

2 things:

1. Regarding Panda Breeding Center - would going on a Monday be better instead of Saturday? Which day is more crowded?

2. The Sichuan Opera - 2 theatres: FuRongGuoCui or ShuFengYaYun, which is preferred?

Should I consider this with 3 kids - ages 9, 13, 17? Also thinking about a Beijing Kungfu show and Shanghai Acrobatics show earlier in our trip. What is best 2 of the 3?

Thanks!

Hey, if I were one of your kids, I would want to see the pandas twice, as each exposure is less than 45 minutes or so of playing as they are fed. The rest of the time is seeing the incubators, pregnant moms in glass cages, film, etc.

You might plan a two-day side journey: first day Leshan and then on to Emeishan for overnight (take cable cars up); second day, sunrise on Emeishan and walk down the mountain or cable cars depending on energy levels, then back for flight.

actually panda base in chengdu is for the tourists, local chendu people will not go to this place for watching panda. we choose chengdu zoo instead. and now the panda card caused so many tourists here, so Mon or Sat is the same----crowed!!

a place to see sichuan opera i recommend SHUNXIN old TEAHOUSE, while watching the show you can have some local snacks to taste, your kids will like these dilicious food.

From chengdu to leshan grand buddha you can take a tourist bus at XIN NAN MEN station!!and you can also take 902( bus number) city sightviewing bus from this station to panda base directly, everyone cost 2RMB.

in comparsion with Sanxingdui museum, maybe Jinsha museum is better: 1) sansingdui museum is a little far from chengdu, and there is no direct bus get there; jinsha museum is in chengdu , you can take local bus get there conveniently!2) now you can apply the panda card access in jinsha museum free, but you should pay 80RMB to sanxingdui museum. 3) jinsha has a longer history than sanxingdui , and for the kids, jinsha museum is more interesting and can have more fun there, from my opinion museum is a boring place for the childrn if this museum lack of activities to attract kids.

Thanks SoBeSparky and cicilan for the advice. I think may go with Jinsha museum - planning to go to Shanghai museum also so may be all museumed out by the time we get to Chengdu. Will probably stick with Saturday for Panda Breeding Center too since really no difference in the crowds.

Thanks!
