Private Driver, DIY Xinjiang Tour

We were in Xinjiang for 16 days in October 2012 and Ablajan was our driver and guide for the North Xinjiang leg of our tour. A Turpan native who is now based in Urumqi, Ablajan is very knowledgeable of the area. He is also personable and a safe driver.

There are only a handful of drivers in Xinjiang who hold a tourist guide license and can speak fluent Uighur, Mandarin and English. Ablajan is one of them. Engaging his services will mean you can save on engaging a separate tour guide. He is also not affiliated to any tour agencies, which means fairly transparent costs.

We highly recommend him if you're looking for a private driver rather than go through a tour agency in Xinjiang. I believe Ablajan is also able to accept South Xinjiang assignments.

Really good guide during our Turfan and Urumqi tour! It was a pleasure to visit xinjiang with not only a driver but also a guide!

He helped us to check in at our hostel and hotel, he suggested really good restaurants and took care of all our trip there!

if you arrive in urumqi call him!

Ablajan did not only drive me, but also guided me to the places of my interest. His perfect Uyghur (for sure) and Mandarin, made it convenient to get in contact with local people. His excellent English helped me enrich my knowledge about Xinjiang. The guide license he owned was another plus.

Ablajan’s car was also clean and very comfortable. He drove safely through icy roads in the harsh winter.

The things that didn’t suit me were only about leaving early in the morning and about meal time. However, maybe I’m just an exceptional. Others would leave their itinerary to the guide and be sure to take a break in the itinerary for a real big meal.

We had scheduled tours in Urumqi and Turpan last year. We had a Uyghur driver by the name of Ablajan who was very knowledgeable, reliable, and had a great sense of humor. Both his English and his Mandarin are good, which proved to be extremely helpful, given our limited profiiciency in the Mandarin language. Of course, he was also fluent in Uyghur. We felt that he also went the extra mile to ensure we were taken care of (whether it be making sure we were successful in checking into our hotel or making sure we had a good place to get dinner). We would definitely contact him if we were to return to Xinjiang on future tours! I believe he is also a licensed tour guide, so anyone interested in doing such tours can probably hire him as both the driver and the tour guide. We truly had a wonderful trip!
