How to get from Yunnan to Thailand?

Hi,

What are the best ways to get from Yunnan province to Thailand?

Would it be best to take a flight to Bankgkok or is there an overland route via bus or train into northern Thailand?

FYI - I am an American in my late 20s and do not speak either Mandarin or Thai.

Thank you! xie xie

China doesn't border Thailand. You could go through Laos to get there.

Looks like buses from Nanning, but not Kunming to Hanoi.

Flying does make more sense, it seems both to Thailand or Vietnam

No direct bus to both countries. AFAIK, by bus from Kunming you can reach as far as Vientiane of Laos and Hekou(next to Lao Cai of Vietnam where you can take train to Hanoi).

Kunming-Hanoi was available sometimes by bus in the past, but no bus scheduled for the moment. You can recheck by then in case it comes into operation.

Flight Kunming-Hanoi seems closed since last year.

The historic passenger train Kunming-Hekou is permanently closed.

China Eastern flies from Kunming to Bangkok and Kunming to Chiang Mai daily. Also from Jinghong (Xishuangbanna) to Bangkok on Monday, Wednesday, Saturday. Thai Airways also flies the KMG-BKK route daily. You can also fly Kunming to Vientiane then cross into NE Thailand overland and proceed by road or train.

Overland you can cross the Yunnan-Laos border at Boten, Laos visas available on arrival. Buses are available from both Kunming and Jinghong to the border and even into Laos. Inside Laos, you get get bus to Huai Xai then cross Mekong River by ferry to north Thailand and proceed to Chiang Rai. There are sleeper bus services from Kunming to Luang Prabang but it is long and arduous.

Besides flights, you may catch ferry along the Mekong from Jinghong Port in Southern Yunnan to Chiangsaen,Northern Thailand. It is 344 km long ,and it take 10 hours long by cruise. You can join an express boat for the spectacular daytime journey to the Golden Triangle.

That "ferry" #9 mentions is a passenger/tourist speedboat and is not necessarily running on a regular schedule (if it is at all). IIRC, it wasn't cheap, maybe around USD 150. Cargo boat is a sometimes-possible-sometimes not option but depends on you finding a willing captain (Chinese) and helpful to speak Mandarin. A local Jinghong agent connected to one of the Cafes can probably help set this up but you need to have a somewhat flexible schedule, able to wait around for a sailing and able to spend 2-3 days going downriver, depending on water level. There are still security concerns due to drug running activity in this part of the river.
