Many questions

I am thinking about going to AC in June. If I go I will be staying at the Surrey Beach House in Ventnor City, New Jersey. About 2 miles from the casinos. I have never been to AC and wanted to check it out, however I read some very disturbing posts about AC on Virtual Tourists. They were talking about how dangerous it is, and not to get off the boardwalk. I was planning on walking to the casinos from the hotel, but it sounds like we may not make it there if we do. Drug dealers and their "ladies" just outside the casinos, people being mugged in the parking garage. There is no private parking at the hotel as well, any suggestions on parking? I am looking for all the information I can get, because I am almost ready to back out.

Unless you plan to walk on the highway, I don't think you will be walking to AC from Ventnor. I don't know what you have been reading, but it's not like drug dealers or ladies of the evening are standing in front of the casinos waiting for people to solicit. Crime is everywhere, you just have to watch yourself and pay attention to your surroundings. There is parking (self parking and valet) at all the hotels. Don't be paranoid, take your trip and have a great time!

Check and see how far the boardwalk goes down. I think I have parked at the south end and walked to the Hilton. I am not sure where that Beach House is in relation to the North or South end of Ventnor. You can park at any of the casino's. There is also parking on the streets of Ventnor.

Don't worry about it, I have actually found the surrounding areas of Niagara Falls more creepy then AC. If your that worried about parking, just use the valet service.

I mapped your walk to Hilton [the closest casino], approx 1.4mi e/w. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2759886 If u do plan to walk to a casino[s], I suggest taking the boardwalk as it you'll have the ocean next to u the whole time and it is safer. I do suggest stopping by the World War I Memorial [even though it is off the boardwalk] as the bronze statue in the center of it is female and wears no clothing above the waist ~ u can see her 8008s! it's at Albany Ave www.flickr.com/photos/flickr4jazz/2359640592/ I know that the jitney does not go into Ventnor and their route ends at Jackson Ave http://www.jitneys.net/573.html I do not know anything about parking in Ventnor, but suggest use common sense when parking ~ lock the doors, do not leave valuables in the car, it u have to leave valuables in the car, do not leave them out visible [like GPS unit on dash, w/display lit] >>Drug dealers and their "ladies" just outside the casinos<< sure AC has seedy areas, but this info is bogus

so, are u from Florence, Y'all?

I am. Live only minutes from the tower. 20 minutes from Cincy. We have been to Vegas several times and looking for somewhere else. Hoping the beaches in Ventnor offer a new experience. I got worried after reading the other site, and wanted to see if this is something I wanted to drive 10 hrs. one way for. I understand there are bad places everywhere, and as long as I know where to avoid I am good with that. They made it sound like you couldn't get out of the casinos. I want to enjoy myself and not be looking over my shoulders if I walk out to the beach.

By the way I see you list Philadelphia/Atlantic City. We were thinking of taking a day trip to Philly while we were in Atlantic City. We were thinking of taking a train in. We did this into New York and it worked out great. Maybe you could help with a suggestion on train stations to get to Market St. & 5th? Thanks everyone for their input.

I'd love to suggest u rent a bike in the morning to take in the boardwalk, but I have no idea if there are bike rentals in Ventnor.

>>They made it sound like you couldn't get out of the casinos<< the casino hotel rooms do not offer in~room suggestions of local attractions, IMHO, the casinos don't mind gamers being leery of going out of the casino ~ this way they have captive spenders.

>>We were thinking of taking a day trip to Philly while we were in Atlantic City<< the AC line takes u to 30th ST Stn [30th & Market] $8 e/w, so I suggest u get off the AC line in Lindenwold, change trains to PATCO and get off at 8th & Market & it's just a short walk, plus it's only $6.75 e/w this way. The AC line train schedule offers PATCO boarding times to successfully catch the AC line back to AC. AC line schedule: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/r0090.pdf PATCO trains run every 12 minutes or so http://www.ridepatco.org/ I cannot offer any info on parking at the AC train stn, but all casinos offer a free shuttle to/from the train stn. the shuttle departing half hour b4 train departure, but ask at the info desk at each casino as to pick~up place/times.

Of course I'm biased, but I think Atlantic City is well worth the drive. It's kinda hard to find a beach or boardwalk in Cinci, tho you do have great chili there!

As for the safety and solicitation questions, you're fine on the boardwalk (tho you will be asked for change by street "performers", just walk on by unless you like the act, then drop a dollar or whatever) as it's well patrolled and actually a fun walk if the weather is nice. (This coming from the woman who cheats by riding a scooter, lol, but I've walked the boardwalk for years with no problems) As with any place, use common sense when walking the boardwalk at night, particularly the 2 to 6 am time frame, as the crazies seem to be out at that time. How do I know that? From traveling back to my room at 3 or 4 am from up or down the boardwalk. You may get solicited then, but not likely as they'll probably be in the more comfy casino bars looking for "business". Ask Ozman how to identify them, lol.

I don't recommend walking around outside of the boardwalk unless you're walking to the outlet stores near Bally's/Caesar's or to White House sub shop - good sandwiches! There's really nothing else to look for in AC outside of casinos, the boardwalk and the shops mentioned above unless you want an adult book store, strip joint, or something of the sort.

As for going to Philadelphia, you can take a New Jersey Transit train - use the trip planner here www.njtransit.com/hp/hp_servlet.srv… to schedule your trave - to 30th St. Station in Philadelphia, then walk across the street and talk the Market Frankford El, weekday schedule here www.septa.org/service/sched/mfl_wk_east.html to 5th and Market St. From there you can do all the sightseeing you want. There's a lot to see and do in Philly, so I'd set aside at least one full day for it.

Enjoy your trip, you'll be there at a very busy time and will find Atlantic City a lively place, making your hotel in Ventnor (I'm assuming it's a nice place, have never been there) a welcome refuge from the hubbub of AC. Mind you AC is crowded with people, but no more dangerous than any other city. Just be aware of others around you and you'll be fine.

@RShip, OK, I count the Irish Pub as being on the Boardwalk since it's just a couple dozen feet away, but Back Bay Ale House (yum, frozen strawberry daquiri basin mason!) and The Old Waterway are not within comfortable walking distance of the boardwalk so I sort of discounted them, as I thought jobronie was looking to walk to AC. Both are excellent choices for food, despite our raving about the basin masons.

You can drive and park at any casino (for a fee, unless you gamble some) OR park at the Garden Pier (next to Showboat) which is good until 4 pm, then you WILL get towed. (Nyah, nyah, stole your line, RShip!)

There are bike rentals in Ventnor at the AAAA bike shop which is at Little Rock and Ventnor Aves about 2 blocks from the Surrey Beach House.

June may be a little cool still for the beach and lifeguards may only be on duty on weekends.

There should be no problem casino hopping if you use the boardwalk. DO NOT attempt to walk from the casino area to the Marina area as you will go through some bad neighborhoods. If you go to the marina area take a Jitney or a cab, or drive yourself( use the Expressway Tunnel ). If you wanted to take the jitney into Atlantic City you would have about a half mile walk on Atlantic Ave to get to Jackson Ave where the first Jitney stop begins. You must walk up to Ventnor Ave at Jackson to take the jitney. If you get one on Atlantic Ave the one block to Ventnor Ave is considered part of the trip from Atlantic City to the end of the line and they will charge you full fare again to take you into Atlantic City. The area from the Surrey to the Jitney is usually safe to walk.

As fare as parking near the Surrey, there are parking meters on the street there and they are enforced if you park on the Street on Atlantic Ave or on Surrey Ave on the opposite side of Surrey make sure you look for no parking signs. Ventnor has certain days where the streets are cleaned by a street sweeper and there is no parking during certain hours at those times. Do not park on any of the private lots near the Surrey as the owners of those lots will have you towed. The Surrey Beach House is a small place that used to be 1 bedroom apartments years ago and was converted to the Beach House. It's nothing special but has gotten some okay reviews. That area is safe but if you leave your car unlocked or valueables inside showing they might get stolen
