Cell Borrowing Scam

Well I just got back from a very losing three day Harrahs Junket to AC! Could not hit anything on Super Times Pay! :( But, I wanted to warn you of a scam that seems to be going on a lot in AC, as I was asked three times. People came up to me on three seperate times and asked to use my cell phone to call their Mom's, Now, none of these people appeared to be Momma's boys, there were payphones about twenty feet away from them, and I heard change in their pockets as they walked. Of course I declined all. When I got home I googled it and learned that they can do the following scam to you:

1. Subscribe you to a text site or phone service for large amounts of money and they receive a commission.

2. Flat out just steal your phone

3. Get your personal information off your phone

4. Call Internationally

5. Clone your phone

This is but a handfull of scams and I strongly recommend that no one let any strangers borrow their phones anywhere!

Very good advice, I actually know someone who fell victim to the text message scam, they were able to get the charges removed but it was a realmess to clean up.

That's interesting.

About two years ago, just when I got off the bus and was walking toward the boardwalk, a woman came up and asked to borrow my cell phone because she lost track of her husband and kids. I was tempted--but, I thought...there ARE payphones around. And when my mom and I lost track of each other once--the casinos can page a person.

So, I said I didn't have one, told her about the paging thing, and went on my merry way.

I only have a rather low-balance tracfone but still...

I never talk with anyone who walks up to me, I imediatly take a defensive position and ask them politly once to walk away.

Someone did ask me to use my phone this sunday in Caesars cause he needs a ride from his friend.

I did let him use it. except I dial the # for him. it was a local 609#.

Hope nothing happened.

fling, do u have the ability to go online to view your phone minutes/history/etc? If not contact your provider and ask them how to do it. You can then view your acct and see if anything did occur and if neccessary turn it off

Thanks rship1,

Nothing happened to my cell account with Sprint.

He did ask me for a dollar after using the phone and I did give me two dollars and some change.

He looks like he lost all his cash gambling and he is trying to get a few bucks to go back to loose it again.

anyway, I kind of know how he feels, been there, except I always tuck away a couple of 20 bill somewhere so I can get back home. Hope that young man will learn from his mistakes.

Again, I hope people don't go too crazy in the casinos. Can't let go the self control and loose every dime in your poket.
