Need suggestions for elderly parents stay in AC in Aug '10

My parents are interested in spending a few days mid week on the Boardwalk in AC. They have been lifelong Las Vegas travelers who now need to stay closer to home (besides Las Vegas is not what it used to be!)

I am looking for suggestions as to a decent hotel that has close access to good food (buffets preferable), good shows (magicians, humor, variety), and casinos, as well as the boardwalk.

In my research, I am confused by the extreme reviews of some of the 'better' hotels, and just want to be sure they get a decent experience.

Right now I'm leaning toward Bally's, as it seems to have nice rooms, close to Wild Wild West Casino with a good buffet, all with good reviews. The other 'sounds good' place for them is Tropicana as I see there is another buffet and a magic show at the Comedy Stop theater when they will be there, but I am concern about how they can get to that hotel if they stay at Ballys.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Thanks,

Karen

I would not put my parents at Bally's, in my opinion, it is a dump. I like the Tropicana, although some of the rooms are a bit dated; I actually prefer Showboat to Bally's. If they don't need to be on the Boardwalk, I would opt for Harrah's or the Borgata, both on the Marina.

IMO Bally's is fine. I stayed there last week in a corner King room. They can get to the Trop with one of the chair pushers on the Boardwalk or a cab.

I would sugget Caesars which is connected to Ballys (including the Wild West). In my opinion the rooms are nicer at Caesars. Either Ballys or Caesars is a win-win situation as far as not worrying about walking around outside at various hours.

>>but I am concern about how they can get to that hotel if they stay at Ballys<< Walk the boardwalk, take a cab [max fare $13], take a jitney, take a rolling chair [negotiate a price BEFORE boarding]

the tropicana buffet is not too good, the only buffets worth while are harrahs or borgata, unfortunately, they are off the boardwalk.

Thanks gdchula! >>the tropicana buffet is not too good<< I was hoping someone would post this. I have HEARD that it is not very good, but fortunately, I have never eaten at Trop's buffet, so I felt uncomfortable posting.

BTW Showboat's French Quarter Buffet is on the boardwalk and pretty good. I just had it last month and I would have eaten more bananas foster, but they changed the recipe and I am not as fond of it as I once was. But Showboat is a bit of a walk from Bally's & further from Trop.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! They are extremely helpful and give me a good idea what to tell them to do once there. Because they are not able to walk long distances, the idea of the jitney/rolling chair is a great alternative!

Thanks again,

Karen

Karen,

I was not able to respond earlier as "someone" (!?) put my keyboard out of commission by spilling iced coffee on it, but now I want to hop in. If your parents are really elderly--as I am, I think they will be quite happy at Bally's or Caesar's because everything is close by. We recently had the breakfast buffet at Caesar's/Roma, and it was enough food to last the day with excellent fruit choices.

While I am not fond of the venue ( long, narrow, windowless) at Virginia City Buffet at Bally's, the food (steak, prime rib, mussels, shrimp, sweet potato fries) there is quite good, and as at all buffets, eat at odd times to avoid crowds. Early morning coffee can be found at the Mountain Bar or the Lobby Bar at Bally's, and at 7:00 A.M. both Gertie's and the Bagel Connection open. Both Bally's main casino and Wild West spill out onto the Boardwalk, and it is a very short walk to the Pier Shops. Hope they have a wonderful time wherever they stay.
