I was just on the Vegas forum. They have this topic being talked about. Some good sugestions
Most public places are not the cleanest! You'd be surprised how many germs are all over everything that you come into contact with. Slot machines are no different.
Try checking any door knob/push plate or other means of opening a door, including your own house!!!
Don't sweat it, just get some hand sanitizer and you'll be fine!!!
I didn't look in that thread, but if you think about it, definitely. I remember a project we had to do in high schoool, get cultures from 4 areas per group, and then incubate them.
Dirtiest - One Teachers desk
Even over the toilet Seat (no one used the urinal wall if i remember correctly), this was the dirtiest. Why? The toilet seat gets washed constantly, and your butt cheeks (don't laugh yet!) really doesn't come in contact with anything throughout the day.
But look at a slot machine, especially one being used constantly, when is it cleaned off? If a slot has people constantly using it, you get the mix of where everyone's hands has been. Also, when your on it, how many times have you seen someone pick thier nose, scratch themselves, etc and then go back to pressing the button.
I guess, to sum up, everyone should use their butt cheek to press the slot machine buttons. MAX BET EVERYONE!
PS - I read somewhere the dirtiest is a house ball at a bowling alley...
If anyone is afraid of germs - they best stay home and never frequent a hotel or casino LOL
There is actually a school of thought that says hand sanitizer is not the best b/c our bodies need to be exposed to germs and not get sick. Its how we build immunity. Kinda like the kid just starting daycare - the little dickens gets every cold, stomach virus etc at first then "gets used to it". If we are never exposed to germs, we cant defend ourselves from them and can really get sick.
So common sense people!
One thing that really helps to keep you from letting the bad bugs attack you is this: Don't touch something you think is gross or germ infested and then touch your eyes, nose, mouth or private parts or open cut/wound. Yes people those mucous membranes coming into contact with the germ is what can get us sick!
This has been a public service announcement LOL
Extra, Extra.....There's a new reality show about to air!!!!
Dr. Jane Medical Woman!!! lol
So........... what your saying is that I shouldn't lick the buttons on the slot machine for good luck??
Kidding aside, yes slot machines, as well as casino chips, chairs, door knobs, bathrooms are all pretty dirty but I agree with Jane. It's important to expose ourselves in some regard to build up immunities. My brother is a sani fiend, especially with my niece and this poor child has been sick more then any kid I know.
i use hand sanitizers and carry a small trial size with me in my pocket when i visit casinos. i apply it after every handshake with a host or slot attendant.
and i generally will not play near people who seem to be quite sick, those who are repeatedly sneezing and sniffling and coughing (often with no tissues and without covering their mouths). of course, i have no way of knowing who was playing an empty machine before i sit down and touch all the buttons they just touched!
but here's the funny thing about hand sanitizers...
they were only introduced (as consumer products) about twelve years ago and only became popular and widely available after the SARS and H1N1 ("swine flu") pandemics. they didn't really exist before that, except in the health care and food service industries.
and people were basically quite healthy without them. the body has an enormous capacity to withstand most germs! and while people do get sick from things they touch (door handles, slot buttons, other human beings), they also get sick from airborne germs when sick people sneeze and cough into the air, often while you're a captive "audience" for those germs: on a plane, a bus, a train, while waiting in line for a casino buffet.
i had the flu over new year's and i'm pretty darn certain i got it from a woman who was in line behind me as i waited for a bus (when she should have been home in bed). my hand sanitizer was of no use whatsoever.
so, yeah, most surface areas in most casino hotels are filthy, including slot buttons, video touch screens, your hotel room drinking glasses and your bed spreads. but in most cases, these germs pose no threat.
go ahead and use hand sanitizer if it makes you feel better. i do and it does. (and some casinos actually provide it for their employees and their customers.) be aware, though, that some say that using hand sanitizer to excess can actually de-senstize the immune system and work at cross purposes. whatever the case, do remember that the body can withstand most of the garden variety germs you come in contact with and for airborne germs, your hand sanitizer won't do any good.
and if you're really sick, do you and your coworkers and others around you a big favor: stay home!Edited: 12 January 2011, 22:05
Speaking as a "professional" LOL, most people are fine we the variety of germs and bateria that are out there. As Jane said, just don't rub your eyes or touch an open wound, etc. and wash your hands before you eat. The problems begin if your immune system is compromised say in the elderly or children. My resistance is pretty high after years of being exposed workig in the hospital and being in hospitals daily.
Now on the bowling ball analogy, that might have been true in the past when bowling was at it's peak but the number one source of germs and bateria today is a hotel TV remote, it would shock you the types of bacteria and viruses they found on them. I travel a lot and that's the first thing I clean when I check in, and I'm not a clean fanatic.
Nice topic, something different.
The Kitty Glitter slot machine greatly resembles 'Kitty Litter'.
So.... if I play this slot machine, will I build up an immunity to toxoplasmosis?
You might even start to purr! lol
My Grandma used to say we all eat a peck of dirt beore we die.Slots and a whole lot of other things we touch have germs.
I believe the human body has the ability to build resistance to many of these. Over use of antibiotics is a hot topic.
We all want to protect our loved ones-but are we perhaps becoming 'too clean"? Are not vaccines dormant or mild doses of the virus they protect us from? I dunno.
My advice- have another drink-alchohol kills germs.
